Ughhh... DL's will not make your belly soft. They will blow up your Obliques, low back, and abds. They can give your midsection that "blocky look", but at a low body fat your abds will look better than those who don't DL/Squat heavy. Peace.
This Bro called it right.
Heavy deads thickened my waist, but it's not soft!
I think you could minimize the growth of your obliques by using a belt on all sets of deads and squats. At the same time you'd be minimizing the strength of your core as well.

A good bud of mine (who's a monster btw) told me to avoid deadlifts if I want to stay lean because deadlifts tend to make you "soft in the belly". I dont like his advice so I wanted a 2nd, 3rd, 4th.....opinion.
And yes I'm aware it was one of Arnolds favs and that he had the waist of an 8 year old boy....but not everyone's a freak like Arnold.
total opposite is true. deadlifts when done correctly will improve your lower back and abdominal strength.

yeah usually you can DL more than bench

some guys can incline more than their flat bench, thats WHAT trips me out!

Great advice all the way around as usual. Thanks & peace.
BTW, I love DL's and will continue to hit em hard. The only "soft" area in my midesction is due to a little slackin on my part in the diet.
Go Steelers! Oh, and f*ck the Pats...Indy blew it!!!!

when your lifting the bar off the ground and you start to struggle , you will notice you start using your abs more
so moral of the story is no soft belly, but rock hard abs and sepration in them if your Bf is low

peace
