Hello everyone......

This is my first post here and I'm amazed with the no. of members here..........this place must be buzzing with great inside information on how to lose weight, fat, put on weight and all I guess........

Alright here's my problem guys.........I'm 22 years old and overweight as hell......My weight is currently 250 lbs. and I really need to lose weight now.........I promised my mom and dad to show them great results in 6 months from today.........I've occasionally done fad dieting......the last time I dieted (No excercise no nothing.........just on a fruit diet) I lost around 50 lbs......but I put it all back in 7 months......for the first time in my life, I thought I will try nutrition and excercise this time.......my parents are really mad at me for being this overweight.......in India, parents are very concerned about their children's looks and all.........you know tradition ...customs....arranged marriages....a big history to that.......My bro sent me a copy of Bill Philips's Body for life book ......he asked me to follow it......after reading it for two weeks I've decided to give it a try......I've started the program yesterday and just want to be sure if I'm doing it right........I would love to use supplements but the problem is that they are too costly in India or unavailable ......hence I will have to stick to home food.........btw, my mom said that she would help me out by cooking food for me if I give her some table or plan of what I need and what I want........anyways, here is my program right now:

My weight : 250lbs.
My height : 5" 11
My target : 160-170 lbs.
Time: 6 months
My waist : 47 " (I want my waist to be around 34)
Body Fat : I dont have BF callipers.....so dont know

Training:
Do weight training 3 days a week ( each workout for 46 mins.....upper,lower,upper.......following the exact BFL plan)
Aerobics on the other 3 days ( each session timed at 20 mins on the treadmill.....again following BFL)

Nutrition:
Eating 6 meals a day..........starting at 8 am with 2 1/2 hrs. gap between each meal........here's what I had yesterday:

8 am : Two slices of brown bread with a 4 white and 1 whole egg omlette(1 tsp. oil used)

10 : 45 am: One portion(palm size or you can say a clenched fist I guess) of fat free Yoghurt with 1 white and 1 whole egg omlette ( 1/2 tsp oil used)

1:15 pm : One portion of brown rice, One portion of steamed potatoes and 125 gms. boneless chicken (again steamed) with little spinach(just to add taste)

4:00 pm : One packed chicken soup...not homemade.....

6:30 pm : Same as breakfast........

What do you have to say on my diet guys? am I doing it right? I really need to lose weight badly and I'm ready to do anything for it......the only thing I cant do is get supplements unfortunately........honestly, I cant spend that much money....considering that I am unemployed right now....:(......My bro(he stays in the US) will be coming here in mid may.........he promised me to get 3 months supply of xenadrine and flax seed oil.....provided I convince him that it will work and have no side effects........

I hope all of you reading this can give me some advice or the other..........again, I desperately need to lose weight......my laziness and extra fat is affecting my studies as well......

Looking forward to your humble replies

Regards

Raj from India

Can anyone help me...? Any sort of advice would be great........but please note that I cannot buy supplements for two reasons.......one most of them are not available in India.......and two, if they are I cannot afford them.....

Looking forward to your replies

I would say that if you have that much weight to loose go for the atkins diet. Pretty much everthing that is in the book is on the atkins website.

All you do is eat nothing but high protein products and no carbs. It allows you 3 cups of green veggies a day or 20g total carbs during the 1st 2 weeks. After the 1st 2 weeks you can start adding carbs little by little until you stop l osing weight. Being that overweight you will see such great results in the 1st 2 weeks you will not want to even think about adding carbs. A friend of mine was 5'9" 190lbs and has a naturally stocky build. He had a lot of fat going on though, but he followed atkins for 6 weeks and lost 26 pounds. He could have kept going, but he reached his goal so he stopped and started to WO and eat clean.

I think that if you are that much over weight the fat will melt off in no time.

Either do the Atkins or take a look at Crumcakes diet that is all over this message board. Atkins will give you faster results though as far as burning fat. Crums is more for keeping the hard earned muscle a lot of us have and to brun that last few pounds of stubborn fat. It will work, but it will take a little longer.

I think with Atkins you will be down A LTO after 2 months and than you can start to just eat clean and work out harder to start to grow more muscle.

Just go to Atkinscenter.com and read up. It will explain everything for you. Either that or just read the boards to find out everything you need to know about burning fat

Hey man, I admire your goals, I was there once, 5'6" 210lbs and it was all fat. I made several decisions and pushed towards my goals, I did cardio mostly, some weight training, ate clean and yes I took Xenadrine as well. I cut my calories, truthfully I was not all that concerned with carb intake. The calorie cutting alone mixed with the cardio and the Xenadrine worked wonders.

I personally feel that a balanced diet is the best, but that is my opinion, others who had sucess on the Adkins diet may feel otherwise. Best to decide for yourself, I can only tell you what I did. My results, I got down to 168lbs, once the fat was lowered I started trying to gain the muscle. It all takes time, stay focused and don't give up! Good luck man, keep us posted!

If you are significantly overweight, ANY diet will work. The real challenge is sticking with it. There are many diets out there: Atkins, BFL, high carb, low fat, etc. Any and all will work for someone who is 30 or more pounds overweight.

That said, I would find your basal metabolic rate (search these boards for the formula) and eat 200 - 300 calories under that. Eat a variety of foods. Plan your meals and cook them ahead of time if possible. But don't let the diet become an obsession. Don't spend every minute thinking about food. Find your calorie limit and stick with it.

Also, I would work in some exercise. It doesn't have to be 3 hours in the gym or 1 hour on the treadmill. Just 20 - 30 minutes of moderate intensity anything. Ride a bike or walk to work or school. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Anything. Just be CONSISTENT. A little every day.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your advice guys...........I'm really serious about this........six months down the lane I want to see my self with muscle and fat..........you guys are really inspiring.......I just have a few more questions guys.......Am I eating correctly?.........and today my gym instructor measured my weight and my body fat using a Tanita body scale. It showed :

Weight : 248 lbs.
Body Fat : 49 % ((???????? is this possible? I think it is wrong.......the guy is saying it is correct......personally I've never read anywhere on the web with people more than 40% BF)

But he did give me a word of encouragement...he said that it was easier for me to lose weight and put on muscle.....or even start body building.......he said that my weight would have been around 160 lbs if I was muscular...........what do you have to say on this guys?

Thanks again for all the advice.........

Raj

Hey Rajkan, any diet that reduces your calories below maintenance will work. Glancing over your meal plan, it looks like you need a bit more protein. Add some tuna, or more chicken into your diet. Ditch the hi GI potatoes and replace with something like oatmeal. Yoghurt has too many carbs not enough protein, so replace that with cottage cheese. I also recommend adding some vegetables for vitamiins and fiber. Stuff like brccolli and spinach work well.

You don't need any supplements to lose weight. Flax isn't going to melt fat off your body, so don't worry about it. Diet pills boost energy and control hunger, very little fat burning. So don't worry about that, just concentrate on eating good food, and keeping calories low.

You exercise plan looks fine.

I agree with some of the other people about cutting your calories, protein is a must for gaining muscle, but at this point I think it is less of a need that simply cutting calories. I do not agree with the statement that diet pills will not burn fat. They give you energy that is correct, but I know my waist went from a 38 to a 34 and I do give some of that credit to the Xenadrine. But remember, all people respond differently.

Haz.....do you know what Xenadrine does??? It increases your heart rate which will burn fat. It makes your body feel like you are doing very light cardio pretty much all day long. Check your pulse and than take 2 pills. Take your heart rate again in about 1-1 1/2 hours and I guarantee it will be a little higher.

A higher heart rate bruns fat. That is the main reason cardio works. It is because your heart rate is increased and there for burning fat. I use ripped fuel and it has ephidrine and caffeine in it. It gives me the energy along with the fat burning.

I am not familiar with why Flax is helpful, but i do take it from time to time on days when I don't get a lot of red meat in my diet. For instance...If I eat 1 lb of steak in a day I don't take any, but if I eat 1/2 lb I take a couple of table spoons with my protein drink. I am going straight from what people have said on this thread about flax so I really don't know much about it.

Getting supplements from the health food stores you are going to pay way too much. I get pretty much everything from Walmart. I got some flax and Ripped Fuel from GNC and paid $16 for each. For the same size of each at Walmart the Flax is $6.50 and the Ripped is $11. ALA is also cheaper there. For a $6 supply at Walmart you will pay $20 at GNC. Glutamine....$3 for 50/500mg tabs. Tell your brother to get it there or order online. You can find it a little cheaper online, but I like Walmart becauseit is more convenient for me.
