Been a long time since I have been up on who the better company is.

Been wanting to get a new laptop and cant decide between the ones with AMD processors or Intel processors.

I remember that AMD used to provide more bang for the buck with desktop computers but this was before Dual core and hyper threading technology.

All I remember is that while AMD was good...they had a tendency to run hot and that wasnt good in a laptop...but again that was pre Dual core and hyper threading technology.

Just need the laptop for fairly basic functions..internet,word documents,dvd/cd burning..maybe some video transcoding...but NO GAMING...I use my xbox360 for all my gaming needs.

Was thinking about this one....

Any suggestions??

Supposedly Intel's new chip architecture (Nehalem) was based on AMD designs.

The only thing holding Intel back is their northbridge design. I think the new chips will fix/improve that though.

I don't think there is any difference. My government laptop is an AMD and it works great. Then again, it's running a Linux based operating system.

Unless you're a gamer or overclocker you won't care. It's like expecting your car to drive better with Mobil vs Chevron gas. Dale Earnhardt Jr. might notice; we won't.

I am building my first new PC since 2001. The one I have (in sig) is still perfect but it's time to move forward. I got the first two pieces today. Antec P182 case and Seasonic S12 II power supply. Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L and Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 are next. I'll run it stock for a year then overclock it.

E8400 is at a better price point. I'd go for a quad core though...actually wait for the Nehalem architecture to come out.

Nehelam is going to have an integrated memory controller supposedly - which is classically an AMD feature.

But it depends how much you're looking to spend...

You still gonna run Linux?
