Chat board - school me on exactly how it works, PLEASE!

I'm plat...when I log in it automatically opens the chat thingy...which I promptly close.

Then every once in a while I'll get a little box pop up from an individual.....

Is there a common chat room where every one can chat real time? Is that the box that pop's up when I log in?

If a little box pops up from an individual does that mean it's a private chat?

the one that pops up when you log in is a group chat and if you get a box pop up from an individual it is private chat.
