cardio and sweating

brunette

New member
when i workout hard, and i mean upto 85% of max heart-rate, for 30-40 minutes on a eliptical and DON'T sweat, what does this mean?

i thought, not working hard enough right, BUT sometimes i have sustained 60mins of treadmill powerwalking in the fat burning zone without sweating one bit.

why????

this makes me think i am wasting my workout, am i?

i drink whilst working out too.....and before and after.

anyone else?

do you get flushed ? (red in the face)

you sweat when your body is trying to cool yourself down...you must have a good O2 uptake (the air your passing out is keeping you under sweating range) or super slow twitch muscles... which is genetic.... any of your family members athletes/ runners/etc?

1] You're a lazy bastard

2] In England it is hardly above 12 degrees Celsius in summer, too cold to sweat

3] Sweating is not an accurate indicator of intensity
In my cycling classes there are a couple of fat asses that sweat like horses though they stay on the lowest intensity and don't seem to feel tired

Sweating is partly genetic (ie hyperhidrosis = excessive sweating condition)

it also depends on the room temperature, humidity, if you're tired, stressed (adrenalin), your hydratation.......

At what HR do you do your cardio ?

BTW, I'd say that the more muscle you hyave the more you should sweat

More muscle = more Work /Energy = more heat = more sweating

ummm.....no...good try though.....one has nothing to do with the other....for many, it's a genetic thing...but, if you ever look at the obeses population, they are continuously sweating....How do u know you are at 85% is my question.....that's some pretty- f0ing intense cardio for that long of a duration....I'm doubting it........

jkurz you can doubt all you want sweetie, but trust me i am a cardio queen. 85%, trust me, i can FEEL it, and use the measure as a guide only. you don't sound like a cardio person lol.

now that you have questioned anthrax's premise, about more muscle mass=more work = more sweat, i am as confused as i started. because that sounded promising.

i am no fat blob, nor a bag of bones. i have muscle, in good measure.

sometimes when i work out i am cold, and i am not lazy.

anthrax, no., i don't think so somehow. i workout in a gym, true its air conditioned but i hardly go to socialise. i work, i sweat it dude. well, not literally sometimes

anyone else?

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm quit knowledgeable when it comes to cardiovascular health........certitfied spinning instructor, taught for 3 years, blah, blah....anyways, I just wanted to make sure you meant 85% for that long of time..........how do you measure?

i measure by the machine handle bars. I KNOW they can be off, but when my heart is pumping out of my chest and i can barely breathe, naeutious, and sometimes my heart hurts, i know i working out, maxing out.

are you really a spinning instructor? (sorry to doubt you lol) i have always wanted to try a class, but is it more cal burning than eliptical? what if i could not keep up?

The class is tailored so that it's YOUR class..........you chose how hard you want to go.....the elliptical in my opinion only, is junk.........way too easy no matter how hard or heavy you set the resistance...........much rather, spin or use the treadmill.......anyways, back to the point, spinning is the only exercise where I've hit my max of 200bpm.........those handles can be wayy off, so invest in a cheapy HR monitor.........what is it reading for you?

jkurz - I just started using the elipical about a month ago and have worked myself up to 30 minutes and about 450 calories (or so the bogus computer reads)...I work up a real sweat...dripping quite profusely...after this I push out a 6 mph jog on the treadmill. Then I start my lift routine....soaking wet btw... :)

I hate most aerobics/cardio and only really do it out of guilt and/or necessity. I'm a big guy at 255lb and probably 13-15% bf....(wanting to get lower here...)...so the elipical 'feels' preety good to me and my taxed joints. I don't feel winded on the elipical like I do the treadmill, but I was under the assumption that being non-winded, might put be more into that 'fat-buring' zone...no?

Was wondering why you think the elipical is junk? No flame here...just wanted your opinion. Would I be better off using those 30 minutes of cardio somewhere else...

Brunette.....might try wearing some sweats or plastic suits if you desire to sweat more...
