cardio and sweating

brunette said:
when i workout hard, and i mean upto 85% of max heart-rate, for 30-40 minutes on a eliptical and DON'T sweat, what does this mean?

i thought, not working hard enough right, BUT sometimes i have sustained 60mins of treadmill powerwalking in the fat burning zone without sweating one bit.

why????

this makes me think i am wasting my workout, am i?

i drink whilst working out too.....and before and after.

anyone else?

I was thinking about this again last night and have to wonder if what you are thiking is 85%, really is a lot lower...........can you invest in a cheapy heart rate monitor?

When you push downward, make sure the knee doesn't go over the toes.

A bit like when squatting then...

What Daisy says might sound nice, but it's wrong on science. Your body sweats more the and earlier as you improve.

First, while the elyptical is for old people with injuries, you should find a better piece of equipment.

Also, I think the real issue is you are not drinking enough. Your urine should be near clear.

As a reference, I am in awesome shape. I mean really good cardio shape. I went spinning last night for 45 minutes. During that time I drank a half gallon of Ultima. This morning I was at the track and I downed a quarter gallon of Ultima and a quarter gallon of regular water. I sweat like Britany Spears in a confessional booth. I squeezed more out of my tops this morning and last night than most people drink all day - totally seriously.

Anyway, you aren't hydrated enough. Monitor the color of your urine carefully - it should be near clear.

And don't worry about gaining water weight. Drinking water actually accelerates your metabolism.

I respectfully disagree.

Your case might be different because you are so experienced in cardio. You intuitively change your intensity and know how to push yourself - therefore the workout is different *every time*. Especially if you are talking about Spinning and track/speed/sprints workouts. No two Spinning or sprint workouts are the same - your body adjusts for the way it feels that day.

On the Elliptical, or any other cardio machine, most people set it for a certain resistance/incline/intensity for the same amount of time. They stay there. They do the same machine, same everything. Eventually, the body will adjust and will not have to work as hard - because it is NOT BEING CHALLENGED. If you are not challenging your body, you will not sweat as much, because you are exerting less effort. What used to be challenging is no longer.

You have no science on your side; you don't know what you are talking about.

You are applying what you know about muscle development and cardiovascularism (the body adapts to progression) backwards to the autonomic neverous system's use of eccrine sweat glands.

The better health someone is in, the faster and better the eccrine glands respond. That means more sweat, earlier sweat, and longer sweating.

The more you train:
- the more efficient your lungs become at using oxygen, so you are not out of breath as much
- the stronger your leg muscles are, and the less tired they become
- the more readily your eccrine glands respond

I can give you some science links/quotes if you want.

What a good test would be is for this girl to hydrate thoroughly (near clear urine for a day leading up to the exercise) and then see what happens when she gets on the elyptical.

synpax my wee is ALWYAS clear, and that is not a boast.

now i am just as confused as before. btw i also drink 1.5 gallons e/d.

I don't need scientific quotes, I can fully accept if I am wrong. But it seems me, in my experience, that there is a correlation between muscle/body adaptation and sweating or exertion. At least in me, and I cannot imagine I am put together so differently than any other human, lol.

I may have the science wrong (no shocker there), but I believe 100% in the concept I was trying to get her to do - change her workout as I believe her body has adapted to it.

You are saying, scientifically, there is *no* relationship between cardiovascular conditioning and sweating?

And I think it quite wrong for you to state that "I have no idea what I am talking about". I have plenty of knowledge....although I am certainly no expert on everything (never claimed to be) and will admit when I am wrong....to say I have no idea what I am talking about is quite a kick in the balls.

Yeah, I'll stick by the 'you have no idea what your talking about.' That's just the truth.

And you quote me wrong. I said, scientifically, there is a relationship between conditioning and sweating. The better conditioned you are the more you sweat, the sooner you start sweating, and the longer you sweat.

I've said that about four times now - how did you miss it every single time?

Sweating is a benefit to the body. It's something your body gets better at, not worse at over time.

I will get you some science.
