Texas Couple Accused of Decapitating Kids

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - A couple accused of killing and decapitating their three young children could face the death penalty if convicted.
A grand jury indicted Maria Angela Camacho and her common-law husband, John Allen Rubio, on three counts of capital murder, and a fourth count was filed against them Wednesday under a state law allowing an additional charge if two or more people are killed at the same time.
Camacho, 23, a Mexican citizen, and Rubio, 22, of Brownsville have been jailed without bond since police found them in their small, one-bedroom apartment March 11 with the children's bodies.
Police say the couple confessed to strangling and decapitating them.
At a bond hearing March 18, an investigator told a judge Camacho had said the couple killed the children because they were too poor to support them and didn't want them to suffer. Another detective said the parents told police they thought the children were possessed.
Preliminary autopsy results showed 2 1/2-month-old Mary Jane Rubio, 1-year-old John Esthefan Rubio and 3-year-old Julisa Angela Quezada probably were suffocated. They also had multiple stab wounds.
The couple were appointed attorneys after the indictments.
They previously had been referred to the state child protective agency because the children were found to be malnourished and needed medical attention, but the parents weren't accused of physical abuse.
Weeks before the youngest child was born, state investigators closed the case because the couple were living in an apartment and had completed parenting classes and the children were gaining weight.
