Over here, you have to prove that you did not know right from wrong at the time of the crime. So yuo have to PROVE the defendant is a drooling retard, or was NOT able to tell right from wrong. I've met a LOT of mentally ill people and I've NEVER met one who was that crazy. Just being mentally ill is not a sufficient defence. Real legal insanity is very very rare. THis is different from the person who gets community service in return for seeking treatment for whatever is bothering them.

Also over here, people who succeed in getting an insanity plea accepted tend to be locked up for life. The reasoning, if you are that fucking dangerous, ok, we won't jail you, but you'll be lucky to see sunlight EVER again.

Either way, you are kept out of society's way, pretty much permanently.

Idon't know the case in the US.

The standard advice given to a crim over here for whom mental illness is a factor (we're talking much less serious stuff of course in this case) is to plead guilty and then seek treatment while in the slammer.

I wouldn't worry about these two poink, they are unlikely to ever get out.
