sorry, my oprofile should read london, england
dont worry about the flame thing, i take little on the internet personally, and were just debating shit anyhows so it aint like u insulting me. i keep forgeting theres a london in america, or canada or something.
as for what i said about the japs wanting to surrender, yes, they were looking to get out of the war. publicly the emperor was like 'we fight to the end' but in some program referring to the nukings on BBC2, historians and those that were around then have said that japan wanted to give up, but not unconditionally, it had a lot of conditions that would have been possibly unfair to the US or something, but anyhow the US was having none of it. they wanted a full surrender, the japs not knowing any better went screw it, and then the nukes happened.
but the scientists that developed the bomb were being told to build it quickly as they may not get a chance to use it + it was needed to demonstrate to other countries (i.e. russia) that the US was now very powerful. now i wasnt saying that the US should do a land assault 'cos if it were a choice between a land assault and crippling your enemy from the air in one blast, most would choose the bomb, plus japans very mountainous and all that. but what im saying is they could have accepted the surrender on those conditions. the information is based of what peole have said (the scientist might be feeling a bit guilty after building that bomb in the first place), none of its been officially released so it might be a little suspect. but its likely to be true, for instance its unlikely they would have agreed to your huge presence on okinawa (thank sod they did though because if not, who knows what the chinese and russians would be geting up too!)
