are car alarms even worth installing?

no one pays attention to them except the owner of the car, and if the owner isn't within earshot, then it's pointless.

most people when they hear a car alarm go off all they think is, "damn it, that asshole better turn that thing off!"

i should probably get one when i install my system, but i'm just wondering if it's even worth the time/effort.

of course, i'll be my own theft-deterrant when i install my new system - i won't bump it too close to campus or anywhere near my neighborhood. plus i don't go bragging about my system to people i don't know (or people i don't trust). if no one knows about it, then they have no reason to try to steal it from me.

get a alarm with the two way pager so you know if the damn alarm goes off

yeah, i know they have them, but when i'm sitting in class my car is 1/2 mile or so away. by the time i ran my ass up the huge hill to the upper campus, my whole system would be gone.

oh, i am planning this install out to be a major pain in the ass to remove if you don't know how it was put in. my goal is deterrance of stealing through frustration of not being able to steal due to a locked amp rack, unremovable sub box (bolted in), and some other tricks up my sleeve. if it goes according to plan, the worst i'd have to deal with is maybe a busted out window or a pried open trunk. even then though, if i don't bump it around home or too close to campus, why would someone want to steal something that they don't even know is there?

I dont know about where you live but here if they cant get it out to have it for themselves you wont have it either.

my buddies deck, minus face plate got smashed, and his subs punctured with a screwdriver or something. so maybe finding a way to prevent that from happening would be a good idea also

good call. they're liable to get pissed and take their crowbar to your entire car.

Then maybe the pager thing would work for you. They`ll have a little trouble and will be stalling while you`re running your ass over there. Even the most brazen fuckers would run if they saw someone running towards them from a distance, with the type of merchandise they`re planning on stealing.

You save about $30 a year in car insurance so it pays for itself in about 10-12 years.

Oak - low crime area. actually, i live in Bumfuck, PA. not much happens around here. me calling the cops on my neighbor a few weeks ago was a highlight for the police force for the next 2 months.

$500 deductable can take care of that. need to see what my insurance will cover as far as installed stereo equipment though. and as Dial Tone said, alarm will lower insurance rates, although i'm already getting a discount because the car has a passive alarm system (some weird key interface thing, it's standard equipment on the car).

GL - imagine someone looking like Crak's Brother (me) running out of the house in his boxers and boots weilding a hand gun at 3am ready to shoot some would-be stereo theives. would they die of laughter, or would i get to hold them at gunpoint until the cops arrived? :lmao:

easy way to prevent car theft?

stop parking your car on the street.

mine's in my garage, secure at work, and only in upscale shopping malls. No probbies.

i don't have a garage. if i parked on the street, my car would be 10 feet or so from my front door. if i use our spot out back, the car is about 30 feet or so from the back door.

i'm not really worried about the car itself getting stolen, just the stereo when i put it in. however, i bumped the stereo in my Blazer constantly and the car never got fucked with. my Blazer also looked like a red rust bucket on wheels.

i always turned the stereo down about a block from the old house, but i really had no fears of anyone messing with the car. on campus, however, is a slightly larger concern. last spring there were about 12 cars broken into in one day and stereos snagged. i always neglected to turn my system down when pulling onto campus and i'm actually suprised my car wasn't targeted, but in a way i'm not. since i only ever listen to metal in the car, my stereo doesn't "boom," it kicks. most people that are low life enough to steal car stereos don't know that it's the box, not the subs, that determine what type of sound you get. maybe that had something to do with why my car wasn't a target.

the new place we're at, the stereo will get turned down 1/2 mile or so from the house. we're kind of close to Section 8 housing. it's not an area i want to roll past with the stereo kicking.
