My dad's been coughing for 2 weeks so far and the family doctor has done dick so far with whatever medication he's been prescribing. It's so annoying.

coughing every 20 seconds. sometimes real bad, but usually short coughs. feel like phlem stuck in throat. What i've read it might be pnds (post nasal drip syndrome), GERDS, Asthma, leading causes. Not sure if a chest radiograph has been done yet. All I know from my far away location. Still eating, no weight loss, otherwise healthy.

Probably went to a public school! Sorry about your dad though. Allergies could cause coughing fits if some particles get lodged in your throat. Hope it doesn't require surgery.

Any attempt to come up with a real differential is assinine. I might as well be pissing with my mouth open in a hurricane. could be anything...check for mould when you're there though, maybe check air quality in home for allergens. chest x-ray in order.

Absolutely could be a number of things, prob why the Dr isn't too concerned.

Where does he live? The tree pollen is starting to fly now in northern parts of the US and throughout Canada, so if it just started in the past couple of weeks, I'd suspect allergies. I know when I first developed allergies to tree pollens, I'd always have a phlegmy feeling and cough/clear my throat all the damn time. At the very least, he should get on Claritin and see if that stops or lessens the problem; it's a cheap, easy way to help narrow down the possible causes.
