All I Can Think About Is 315!!!

For what it's worth, i still feel weak as shit because my training partner is a beast. It's a humbling thing to get on a bench right after you see someone hit 500 for 3.

deads were always the one for me, a few months after learning to deadlift, I pulled a raw 500lb single. But only a few years ago, I couldnt bench 225 for reps, and the funny thing is I was still bigger than most of the guys telling satch how much he should be lifting....To date I've deadlifted 550 x 5, and squatted 465 x 6(that was last week), but compared to my old training partner, am weak as hell. He is a powerlifter that benches close to 600 and squats close to 900 in competition

lowest, there isnt anyone at my gym to push me either. Alltraps can when hes there, but he needs to get his ass out of the casino long enough to catch me.... I just make sure that while I'm "on", that I always beat what I did the week before
 
This thread has convinced me to start 5x5 training again.

the most ive ever seen done with 315 of 5 sets of 10 by my partner. incredibile show of endurance. i have hit it for 11 once. and my partners dad who is 45 can do 3x8 with 315. its good to be italian :artist:

but keep it up, youll get it
 
Some people just don't have it in them to be super strong and maybe Satch is one. I'm not naturally strong. I lifted ALL thru high school and even my senior year there were guys who never lifted that could bench more than me. Strength has never been my goal but I wish I was stronger than I am sometimes.
 
I feel you there dialtone! I consciously made a decision to pursue bodybuilding goals instead of powerlifting ones, but sometimes I wish I were as strong as I looked :) At least, as big as I apparently look to other people, I feel like I should lift a lot more, especially on back exercises. I just suck at pulling exercises in general though, while I'm good at pushing. Genetics again, damn pesky things, can't change them yet, can't be human or alive without them!
 
There was a thread on here a few weeks ago talking about which is more important...looking good or being strong. The general consensus was that looking good was more important. After reading this thread again, it makes me wonder.

What is your motivation? I know with NS, he's looking to make an impact at the national level so obviously the look is the driving factor...but what about the guys that are not competing? Does a big three lift total make you feel like you have actually accomplished your goals or is the mirror more important?

I agree and i disagree..some are able to gain tremendous strength hitting higher reps (6-10) those are the people that were born to bench or whatever..others need to specifically train for strength as well as train their lifts..just depends what you want to do :)

it was always about lookin sharp.

but man... 315 is quite a bit of weight and anybody who is even flirting with those numbers is most certainly VERY strong... what percentage of men can actually lift even close to that??
 
I'm reasonably impressed by anyone who can bench 100 lbs over their bodyweight with good form.

I wish i could remember where i read it, but i know that within the last few years i saw an article either in Flex or Ironman that said that less than 10% of men could bench over 225. And when the poundage got to 300 it fell to around 4%. I keep an Atlantis oly bench on the floor in my showroom and usually keep 225 on the bar for quick pump sets and display purposes. (Btw the new Ivanko plates are sweet!) I can't count the times when a guy has walked in and said "Who the hell can lift that much! Arnold?" It's interesting to see how people who don't train view things.

that statistic sounds exaggerated..

i would approximate that MAYBE 1% of men can bench 225..
and maybe 1/10th of a percent that can bench 300+.
 
are we sampling people from a gym? or do you mean walking the streets of lets say NYC and taking 100 random men and testing their bench?
 
I'm thinking that the polls were done in gyms across the country. I've been online all morning looking for that article. If i find it, i'll post it. I think out of all the men in the world...Satch's #s would be closer to accurate.

When i started many,many yrs ago my first bench was 65lbs, the 300 kept evading me until i was almost 30, i finally broke 400 in my 40's and 500's when i was close to 50.
i don't bench that much anymore as i can feel the wear on my joints!

Damn you guys make me feel strong for my age. When I was 17 I could press 305. I should've tried some powerlifting comps. Another buddy of mine could press 375 at the begining of his junior year in HS. But I grew up with a bunch of mean'n'potatoes rednecks! Not anymore though.

I could never get over that 285 mark and 315 felt like a truck taking it off the becnand thought it would cave me in on the way down, then I started doing heavy close grip bench and in like 3 weeks I had 315 for 3 no worries now I do slow controlled 315 for 6 no problem no spotter. Heavy close grip bench does the trick.
 
yea big guy like all others say its a mental thing. just put 320 on and lift.i betcha youll throw that bitch up there. also change is always good. then come back and destroy your old weight!
 
If there are guys taking grams of gear and barely getting 320, I'd get my shit tested fast. It sounds like your buddies are getting creatine in an injection. Creatine would put on more strength than 15lbs. All the guys i've seen juice put on 10-15lbs of strength on major muscles a week. I know high school kids putting up 380. I've seen a 140lber put up 305 at 16 yrs old. Why juice if your only puttin gon 15lbs of strength is what I'm getting at.

Aint nothing to it but to do it.

How strong are your delts and tri's? It could be that one of these muscle groups is limiting your bench weight.
 
Spend a couple of weeks working in the 235 to 260 range for between 10 and 6 reps. It's often worked for me to work lower for a little while and then hit it back up for a new PR. You might have overworked your CNS.

yeah 315 is a struggle indeed.

a few bros pointed that my tris/delts may not be strong enough to push that weight so i've focused the last few months on delts/back/triceps which were actually my weak points.

and a quick note on weak points..

we all have a weak point and its important for all bodyparts to be proportional in size and strength. so if you have a weak point focus hardcore on it til things balance out.
 
You can get it SATCH, if you havent already, i worked my ass off on Heavy millitary behind my head (even though alot of people think its bad) for about a month and that really pushed me over the top of 315.

I agree with you. I'm like 175lbs 5-6%bf and can press over 300lbs. I hate that bloated fat look. Those are always the guys that hate on us ectomorphs! Either way, Satch you look great as usual and I dont see anything you could work on to make yourself look better. Maybe overall mass, but you don't even need that. Lookin good bro, K for your hard work!

back is a huge part of your bench...a lot of people dont know that....arnold used to super set chest and back for the extreme pump and he felt doing back at the same time helped his chest workout and vise-versa....anyways the point is BIG BACK!....when i was a teenager i was on a powerlifting team...these guys know there strength thats where i was tought

It's all about your fitness goals. Satch hasn't said if he does 5x5 or hypertrophy or some other training method. There are lots of training methods out there to put pounds on your bench, metal militia for one. So not sure how he intends on getting there , it's just getting the 315 that matters.

Lets let a beautiful woman rub her fingers across my abs, then see what she thinks of your stomach. Lets see which she likes better. My goal isn't to be a fat workout guy. Anyone can do that. Not everyone can stay below 5% bf year-round and still press over 300 at my young age. Most anyone here will vouch I'm a nice guy and I'm anything but skin and bones. Look up some of my threads. Yep your absolutely right. The only time I brag on myself is when someone provokes me kinda like georgie did. I agree with you that everyone has different preferences and wants. I don't want to have such a low bodyfat and it be so difficult for me to gain wait, but I can't help it. I eat over 4500 cals a day and everything is in check so I know its not that. I just get tired of people ripping on me because of my extreme hard-gaining body, thats all.

bro, i understand, i was a hard gainer too... and bicept101, your right, but i have some power lifting friends that i used to look at the same way you implied.... after hanging out with them for a bit, i have a totally new found respect for them..

Wow this has really sparked a sizable debate. I think you did take it wrong , but it's kewl.
1. I generally write my posts without expletives but people dont use my standards...

2. I would agree that strength is only part of physical fitness. The example of the fat guys who can bench a ton but can do a pull up, Id say this is a bad example since if you have strong biceps and a strong back then u can do pull ups. Maybe not 20 pullups but probably 5-7. Maybe running a mile would be a better example. I've seen lots of "skinny" people not be able to do pull ups also and not able run a mile.

3. The idea that big automatically means fat , inflexible, and slow is just silly and stereotypical. Charles Barkley was big, short but spent a whole career jumping over taller people getting rebounds. The late Reggie White is another example of a man who can move fast at his size. Mark Fields OLB from Carolina is about 6'2 250 and runs a 4.3

4. Some people don't think small looks good. I guess if your a life insurance salesman , then skinny = healthy :-) Put some mass on and get that cut and then lets c.

Hopefully you get the point by now , your stereotypes are just that , silly stereotypes , and the reason why I used the word "twig" was to incite some of those stereotypes.

So I believe putting on size can be done in a controlled way , but people may not know what ways are available and what works for them. It's all an experiment. SO I guess that's what Satch has to do is put on size and strength, but not let "bulking" get too far out of control.

I'll post some new pics when I get done dieting.

Christ!! Man that was pretty extreme! lol There is a fat cop that goes to my gym who does that tight t-shirt shit. Makes me laugh. He out weighs me by 120lbs or so and is 100lbs weaker. Stay lean and stay mean.

:rolleyes: why are you knocking someone else's lifts??? who cares what the guy looks like maybe he isnt a BB'er..lee priest off season is as fat as hell..prolly wouldt even recognize him..some poepl dont care about being 7% BF this DOES NOT mean they have no discipline..its seems everyone is almost always cutting and cutting and cutting..i see many who cant stay on a bulking diet because they're losing abs or they feel like crap or they cant eat..nothing wrong with being lean either but dont put someone else down because they arent a low BF it really makes you look like you are jealopus that you cant lift as much as they do..

315 is a big achievement and looks nice because you have graduated to the 3 plates on either side level which draws a bit of attention. My last cycle, I did 315 for 8 reps, that was my best. Then my cycle ended and I deflated like a balloon and the strength was gone. Was fun while it lasted but I'm going to get back there. Good luck satchboogie you'll get there!!

I have only done it for 8, and got it four on incline. I feel like a little squeaker now, thanks :rolleyes: . I am 6'1 and 250 too. Tears. I agree with you totally, it is so much mental. I am definitely not built for pressing. Good luck with the 315 bro, drive that shit up!!!!!!!!!

i wrote in one of my other posts on this thread that i was on a power lifting team when i was younger...i know these guys and honestly i hate the way look i do have repect for them...but i garentee those mofos want a nice six pack in the back of their mind:D

Lol hand it to 'em! I was thinking he is a powerlifter as well just due to his avatar. Either way, everyone needs to stop being such pricks to each other on here. I get tired of the constant insults and bickering. I'm not saying you, you defended yourself, but alot of people need to grow up even if they are adults.

You have a great build, very lean. Lean is not usually great for the strength dept. though. Are you still doing deads, squats, incline dumbells, heavy for strength. BP uses alot of shoulder and tricep as well as pec. I work these muscles heavy for awhile before I try to up my BP. I weigh around 180 and can press 350 for one clean rep. great for me but not compared to others. One of my lifting buddies can BP 315 17 times and only weighs 210. I am sure you will come through your avatar shows your dedication. Good luck. I know it is hard working up to a personal best.

You have a fast metabolism I assume so it hard for you to pack it on. Some peoples metabolism drops with age so to be honest you sound like you'd be better off lean. Be careful what you wish for , cause you might just get it.

MY ROUTINE FOR CHEST:

flat bench press...
start with 2 light sets warm up.
then... lift as the heaviest weight for 4-6 reps.
same thing for second set.
take some weight off, and do another 2 sets til failure.

move over to incline dumbel presses and repeat same structure as before.
 
Satch, would you be willing to try a routine I give you? I think it'd get you about 20lbs in a month...PM me if you want bro.

lol was I attacking you? I simply said "hand it to 'em!" I meant it in a sarcastic way now cool your fuckin jets. I wasn't attacking you in any way, I was simply joking around WITH BICEPTS101. Yes I understood your point completely, which is why I never even comented on your post. You can say I have no muscle but your the one saying petty little insults to defend yourself. About 10 months ago I benchpressed 305. It was verified by a powerlifting judge and many guys on here will vouch that im not just skin and bones. I never claim to be a mass monster or even a big guy. I have no doubt your a 'heavy' fella and obviously a powerlifter, whom usually despise us low bodyfat guys. Just because were not thick like a bear like you doesn't mean were not strong. Post your pics, then talk your shit. Sorry to keep the arguing going guys, but I felt I should defend myself.

bro i have one suggestion also regarding bench.....maybe doing incline first for a while will help...i say this cause i do it not for strength but because i lack in my upper chest...but once in a while ill go flat bench first, and my bench flies up each time....worth a try i guess

Ok bro, its kind of "westside" of me, but...

MWF for 4-6 weeks.
Monday=5x5 type back day. BB Rows as your main lift
Wednesday=Bench Day*
Friday=Squat Day 5x5 style

*Bench day 1
Take that same weight that you have been getting for 6 reps and for 10sets of 3 (yes 10 sets) Control the weights, no cheating. You get all 10 sets you add weight next week. I add 10bs at a time.
CGBP 2x4-8
JM Press 2x4-8

*Bench day 2
5x5 Bench day using a weight slightly heavier than your 10x3 weight. Get 5x5 and you add 10lbs the next time.
CGBP 2x4-8
JM Press 2x4-8

DONT skimp on tris exercises they are AS important as the Bench.

Cycle these 3 times each (may work quicker) and the next bench day work up to a max it'll be 10-30 lbs more than it is today.
If you end up adding weight after 4/6 workouts thats about 20-40lbs on your 5x5. Now translate that to your max. :qt: Exactly

TRY THE DAMN THING SATCH!!! YOU'LL LOVE ME AFTER THIS ;)
 
FWIW, I've used this on 4 dudes so far. Shooting 100% so far. Of course Im there forcing there intensity :evil:

These dudes all were lifting already the weakest one got 265 at the end of his 6 weeks (Started at 225 for 1)

one thing that helped me is i got this bud of mine who knows bio-mechanics better than anyone ive ever know to take a look at my bench. what he noticed was that the bar needed to held more towards my lower chest, as i was using to much shoulder holding the bar just above upper chest. he also helped me concentrate on holding my shoulders back and retrackted through the entire motion. if this helps anyone else great... it helped me a bunch.
