...the way the story was written here, it is as if she SHOULD apologize for assuming he was not white...that being accused of NOT being white, when a person REALLY IS white, is an insult, and one should apologize.
I'm just curious...not trying to start a fight or be 'provocative'. I'm interested in this subject because...
...I have a black friend who passes for white. I myself am of mixed heritage...

SC - It's to correct a mistake. She wasn't implying what you are thinking.
If I was talking to someone and said, 'aren't you white?!?!', and it was a black guy with a lighter shade, when he said no... I would apologize just the same. Am I apologizing because I should have never doubted that he would be anything less than a black man, and any implication otherwise would be an insult? No.
Would I be apologizing because he's not white? No.
I'd apologize because I came to an incorrect conclusion about him.
This lady, in no way indicated that there is a superior race.

and the fact she said 'oh, i am so sorry'....i bit iffy as well. a simple 'sorry i was just curious' or 'sorry'......anyhow it got me thinking
ive sen arabs pass as white before but ive never ever seen anyone ask them....

People ask me about my ethnicity all the time.
On more than one occasion, an East Indian and/or Pakistani taxi driver asked me whether I am Somalian/Pakistani/Latin, etc. I said no, I'm black...then there is usually a pause.
Then it's 'oh, I'm sorry. You're too beautiful to be black'.
I know they don't mean it (I hope), but...

Once I was in Iowa on business, with a white male colleague...we rode a taxi from the airport to the hotel...the cabbie was a nice old white guy. Anyway, he goes on this rant about how the 'hood is changing, restaurants coming and going. He talked about how "that over there used be a Church's Fried Chicken, but they only hired black folks, and they stole all the chicken out da back door, so they had to close down!"
He had no idea why me and my bud were laughing so hard...he felt he was speaking innocently about 'those people' and he had no idea I'm black....so me and my bud carried on like we agreed....saying stuff like 'yeah, you know those people are the worst..." and on and on...he kept agreeing, telling us more 'horror' stories about blacks...
enuf. going to work out now.

from what ive seen of tha avatar its fairly easy to make a mistake on your ethnic origin, you look half caste but you could be mistaken for a light brown skinned person, the only thing that would make me realise posssibly is hair but i didnt see enough
you dont look somali though. they have a certain look to them. maybe it was cos you had makeup on

I look different in person than I do in pictures though. My carriage is very haughty...military bearing contributes...so people see me walk, and my mannerisms, and assume I cannot be black American. whatever!
