In college, to make the Ranger Challenge team we had to make a 10k run with full combat load, including m-16 and a 60 lb rucksack. As you finished the run you dropped the rucksack and immediately had to do twelve chins. Our normal PT consisted of calisthenics a 3 mile rucksack run, the chins and electric chairs. We always did PT in combat boots. Three days a week we would follow it up with battalion PT. I dropped from 190 to 172 pounds on a 4k Calorie diet and lost a lot of muscle but I was a machine when it came to strength and endurance.

I forgot to postup what the 300 workout is

* 25 pull-ups
* 50 deadlifts at 135 pounds
* 50 push-ups
* 50 box jumps with a 24-inch box
* 50 "floor wipers" (a core and shoulders exercise at 135 pounds)
* 50 "clean and press" at 36 pounds (a weight-lifting exercise)
* 25 more pull-ups -- for a total of 300 reps

The actors switched between the clean and press with kettle bell presses

Just out of curiosity , how did you find time to eat 4k calories while doing PT?
Did you eat alot of MRE's?

The ALICE field pack(medium)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-purpose_Lightweight_Individual_Carrying_Equipment

Field Pack [medium] - The field pack is made of water repellent treated nylon duck and webbing, spacer fabric, and metal hardware. The main compartment closes by means of a drawstring secured by a plastic cord clamp. A radio pocket is located against the back on the inside. Three pockets on the outside with strap and buckle adjustable closures and with snap fasteners for quick access are provided for miscellaneous items. The top flap has a pocket with a hook and pile fastener tape sealed closure. Equipment hangers are located above each outside pocket and on each side. Drainage eyelets are provided in the bottom of the main compartment and the outside pockets. An envelope pocket is located at the top, back of the pack and padded with spacer cloth, into which the field pack frame is inserted when the field pack is used on the field pack frame. Buckles and straps at each side near the bottom are used for anchoring the field pack to the field pack frame. Two rectangular wire loops located at the top back of the field pack and D rings on each side at the bottom of the field pack are used to provide shoulder strap attachment when the field pack is carried without the field pack frame. A waterproof bag is located in the main compartment and each of the three outside pockets for keeping the equipment dry.

I'm gonna have to do more cardio , but I think that workout as well as PT is more metabolic / cardio intensive. But the PT while carrying the 60-80lb pack would be similar to dinosaur training (which is still cardiovascular)

But incorporating this with small meals between sets of training might be very helpful in building muscle along side cardio vascular fitness.

Definitly sounds tough

I like jumping rope for cardio, easier on the joints. They had an olympic event in Greece called the Hoplite run, basically it was a sprint in full hoplite armor.

Yep , someone on bb.com pointed out to me that HIIT could be performed with a jump rope. Never thought of it like that. But I tried jump rope in my house and the rope kept hitting the top of the ceiling , so it was worthless in my house...

Luckily I'm just a little over 5'10" so I don't have a problem jumping rope inside.

I had scars on my traps from it cutting me during runs and it fucked with my lower back. The civilian backpacks were much better at weight distribution IMO.

all in a row? i couldnt do it all in a row, but with those weights i could easily get it done in 20 minutes and walk out. i thought this was about the movie 300. thats all they did?

bro think about how fast you can bang out 50 pushups and 50 pullups

* 25 pull-ups- thats like 3 minutes right there, even with rests

* 50 deadlifts at 135 pounds - 50 sounds like alot, but at 135 pounds you can easily get it in one set, so like 2 minutes tops right there

* 50 push-ups -- easily banged out in one set,

* 50 box jumps with a 24-inch box- this would suck a bit,

* 50 "floor wipers" (a core and shoulders exercise at 135 pounds) - no idea what the fuck it is

* 50 "clean and press" at 36 pounds (a weight-lifting exercise)- 36 pounds? easily done in 1 set

* 25 more pull-ups -- again, pretty easy, banged out in less than 3 minutes

assuming you get to rest a little between sets, it wouldnt be that bad at all...
for a total of 300 repsushups and 50 pullups.

50 deads of 135lbs would be pretty hard if you're concentrating on each one, pausing at the top and shit

Yes , it's really a fitness test Gym Jones gave the actors and cast order them by fitness.

No it's not all they did , but the idea behind this workout is to stop watch the reps and get the time down as low as possible

Gym Jones? jesus, i thought that was a rapper

Even though my cardio is better than my lifts, I still consider myself in "fitness purgatory": Too fat to call myself a bodybuilder, to weak to say I'm a powerbuilder.

nowadays, when people ask, I just say "Me? I'm a gymgoer, just for shit and giggles"

i could prob do it with a couple breaks i got the strength part down. Is that whole thing suppose to be done continuous with no breaks or can u do sets?

Wow , all this talk about crashing the economy has me wanting to actually join the military...

Anyway currently water depleting so the 300 test will be more doable

I can deadlift 405 for 20 reps, squat 405 for 26 reps(I about dropped from lack of breath after my set!!). My normal pullup routine on back day is 50 reps, usually divided up into 4-5 sets until 50 is reached. 50 pushups? not too hard. Clean and press w/ 36 lbs? Oh damn, thats killer huh? Dude, I know you may find this hard to believe, but there are guys out there who are a lot bigger than Leunitis from 300. also, consider the fact that the camera adds about 20 lbs to you, these were not big guys. they had decent definition but these were not bodybuilders, they were actors who went through a quick conditioning regimen, not a bodybuilding one w/ heavy resistance.

and by the way non of the actors did that workout. that was created afterwords. If you goto the 2nd video link u posted goto the 2nd video and watch it, it shows how they actually worked out

I just watched the 300 movie.
Gerard Butler has a clear case of gynecomastia in the opening scene where he kicks the persian messanger into that pit
It's funny when the average person sees a lean physique, they assume they're huge. I doubt any of teh "Spartans" was over 175# and I'm being generous.

I should have added, the exiled Spartan King counciled Xerxes when he asked about Spartan invincibilty,

"The same goes for the Spartans. One-against-one, they are as good as anyone in the world. But when they fight in a body, they are the best of all. For though they are free men, they are not entirely free. They accept Law as their master. And they respect this master more than your subjects respect you. Whatever he commands, they do. And his command never changes: It forbids them to flee in battle, whatever the number of their foes. He requires them to stand firm -- to conquer or die. O king, if I seem to speak foolishly, I am content from this time forward to remain silent. I only spoke now because you commanded me to. I do hope that everything turns out according to your wishes." — Herodotos vii (trans. G. Rawlinson)

Xerxes asked if a single Spartan could kill ten of his men.....

You need to shrink too...the average Spartan male was about 5'5" and no more than 145 pounds...that's why they had plumed helms..to look taller.. :worried:

Not for me.
I was skinny for the first 26 years of my life, and I'm not going back. Not even for great stamina.

i know gerald butler wasn't actually jacked (just lean) but the movie did a good job of making him look good with some size

Yeah, that was the look they were going for.

Lean muscle makes the man look bigger.
Being soft and smooth will make you look smaller

It's all illusion... But yes , I think back then people were generally shorter and thinner
They were also 1000X more physically active

The Spartans also intentionally "starved" their children which inhibited physical development.

But I think that was similar to the pit bull training. I believe that's a psychological issue (lack of food and water) to make you more aggressive
I agree, that was the intent....put them in survival mode.

The Mediterranean Diet is about all I know , LOL
Their primary dish was a "blood soup" made with pork and coagulating blood....and they never gave them enough to satisfy dietary requirements.An Athenian remarked upon sampling Spartan dietary staple,"Now I know why Spartans are so willing to die." :)
