900 has already fallen, and the way modern athletes are progressing it will be only a matter of time before we see someone hit a grand....too bad im only half way there.

Yes, Scot Mendelson would have hit 1000 this year, but his shirt blew open like a granade into bits and pieces with 969. He came back a few minutes later and missed the lockout by an inch in a meet in March, 2 weeks after the Arnold. The bench shirts aren't made strong enough to handle that heavy of a weight, but they are working to modify their designs to help him. He will hit 1000 next year. I, along with several Powerlifting USA staff, have seen him easily bench 965 in training.

Respectable lift, no doubt. But I still have more respect for a raw bench without extreme supportive gear to make the lift. When supportive gear is adding 300lbs to your bench, I wouldnt consider the feat too legit anymore. It seems the supportive gear has to be built stronger so that the lift can be done. Id much rather see how much someone can raw bench, pause or not. Sure it takes some work to get the most out of the supportive gear, but it takes a shitload more work to add 300lbs to your bench without the gear.

Not to dis you...but whatever!

Respectable lift? That's an understatement.
Legit? Not sure if you understand the powerlifting world at all. He's a powerlifter...powerlifters use supportive gear. It's just like any other sport - you use the equipment necessary for optimal performance. His raw bench is no joke either...see for yourself!

***that was his opener...and it FLEW up!***

Lots of good vids here...I particularly like how his wife smacks the shit out of him before he lifts! ;)

Sorry if I came off a bit abrasive, but since I've gotten into the sport, I've learned soooo much and realize that your equipment is just one piece of the puzzle...the work is still done in the gym!

No doubt the work in the gym is done. Not questioning that part. I just dont consider the lift a true 1000lb lift when extreme supportive gear is used, whether its part of the sport or not. 713 is still fucking respectable!! But Ill consider the lift true when I see 1000lbs lifted without supportive gear. Thats like saying if I bench 400lbs I can claim a 600-700lb bench. Not legit in my mind. Im looking for real world strength that I could use in a situation. Im not going to be wearing a bench shirt 24/7. Not to take away from all the dedication involved and if its legit in the sport then why wouldnt a competitor use every advantage available? I do think its getting a little insane though with the supportive gear. I think they should take it down to raw competition and see what happens. Its gone way beyond preventing injury and more into enhancing the lifts by an insane amount. JMO
