totally over worked. big deadlines, big projects, big responsibilities... all on me. I've been working 11 hour days and still not getting to things, then taking heat for it.
Today my boss got mad that something wasn't done and my blood started boiling. NOBODY works harder than me and gets more done, but i'm f'ing human.
He later apologized and said, "maybe we need to meet more often."
I laughed and said "we definately do NOT need to meet more." (that's what I need.... more meetings and less time to get stuff done.)
then I explained all that *I* alone am taking care of - each one could be a full time job (trade show coordinator, webmaster, graphic designer, and marketing manager)

He had to go so i told him we'd talk tomorrow when he had time and I was calmer.

so i'm in my office. It's 7pm and the only one left is me and the owner. I have so much to do I can't think. He comes to my office door and says, "hey... I made you administrator of our phone system."
WTF.
I said, "WHY *ME*???"
he said, "because you're the only one smart enough to figure it out."

and then stilleto snapped.

"REALLY? BECAUSE WE'RE A DAMN COMPUTER COMPANY WITH A WAREHOUSE FILLED WITH TECHNICIANS AND AN OFFICE FILLED WITH PEOPLE DRIVING PORCHES AND BMW'S AND LEAVING AT 5PM. ARE THEY NOT SMART ENOUGH??? BECAUSE IF I AM THAT MUCH SMARTER THAN OUR IT DEPARTMENT, COMPUTER TECHS, OFFICE ADMIN, AND THE OTHER MANAGERS HERE, THEN WHY DO THEY MAKE MORE THAN ME AND LEAVE SO EARLY??? SHOULDN'T THEY BE FIGURING SHIT OUT? LIKE THE PHONE SYSTEM? OR HOW TO SCAN SOMETHING? OR HOW TO CONVERT A FILE TO A PDF? EVERY FUCKING THING HERE IS UP TO ME !!!"

he looked at me stunned, called me "sweetheart", and thanked me for everything I do, how hard I work, how smart I am, and how good i am at everything. Then he said he'll try to be more understanding about my workload, and told me to take the morning off. then he hugged me, handed me $20, and stood by the window staring at the trees. Then I left.

i will probably be fired tomorrow.
 
ew, the corporate world. it makes me feel all gross inside.

good luck stilleto, with your skill set it sounds like you could do better.

IMO, working hard is a given but don't suffer. Even in business you don't win the war by dying for your country. You win by making some other poor, dumb SOB die for his country (yeah, Patton works well in the corporate world).

When you can, always try to swim upstream with new skills, higher-level responsibilities and bigger goals.

Here's a sobering thought (these numbers obviously vary):

For around 20% of what you do, if you just stopped doing it, no one would notice.

For around 40% of what you do, someone making far less than you make could do it.

Probably 40% of what you do is your real job. Figure-out how to make that 40% more like 90% of what you do.

And yes I know, it's easier said than done.

and letto, this is how all corporate america works. Those guys driving porche's are half as capable as you but got the degrees from the prestigious schools. Take your skills and work for yourself or you're gonna be doing ivy leaguer's work loads for the rest of your life and YOU WILL NEVER be recognized for it. Don't kid yourself...they'll bleed you for the rest of your life. Doesn't matter where you go that's corporate mentality. "I put the work in at a higher tiered school now it's time to take it easy". Go figure out what your own life's work is and get started on it. Stop giving to these people.

marketing manager.
i had two summer assistants who are going back to school soon.

I have another assistant who is administrative... I would LOVE to teach her how to do some important things besides stuffing envelopes and filling out forms, but she keeps getting pulled on different projects by my boss (chief marketing officer).

I need a permanent, marketing assistant. Everyone knows it, but getting one is going WAY too slow.
Tomorrow i'm putting my foot down.

i went to one of the best art schools in the country. i'm a graphic designer... it's what I like to do and what I DO do.
graphic designers don't make much money though- I make much more than any normal graphic designer because i'm smarter, faster, and driven... i WANT to be in marketing, not sales, and not VP of anything. I don't mind those guys making good money- i just don't want to do their work, plus mine, plus someone elses.
 
I think you did the right thing letto.
if that boss of yours actually wants to fire you because of that, i'm sure you'll be able to fine a job better elsewhere.
 
I would allow one or 2 days to cool off and then go to him and tell him you would like to discuss the other night nd tell him the same thing in a more calm and decent way :)
 
tell him you got hired with a salary for certain responsibilities, and if he wants to add more on, he needs to add on more salary.

Exactly! Any time I've given one of my workers a little more work, I've compensated them for it. You gotta treat people right!
 
tell him you had an offer at another company for $10k more a year for less responsibilities, doing more of what you were supposed to be doing for him when he hired you, before you took on all these other roles. Meantime you better get your resume out asap.

i just got a 10k a year raise and it's still not enough.

but... manager meeting this morning- first thing asked was what's on my plate.
I give a rundown and it's retarded busy. Nobody could get it all done and there's nothing that can be postponed.
The execs are all looking at each other.
Next manager goes to say what's on her agenda and there's 1 thing.
Next guy has a 1 hour meeting and a conference call.
The execs stop the meeting and say the first priority is to get stilleto some help.

YAY! we're calling a recruiter today.

I think you are getting walked on at that company because you allow yourself to take on so much stuff all in the name of being a good employee. But seems like whats actually happening is you get taken advantage of in ever increasing amounts with no concurrent increase in benefit/compensation.

Jesus, they must be doing great ITE.

Tell them to give you that $5000-10,000, and you'll find your own assistant (craigslist).

Seems to work pretty well where my wife works. I wouldn't do it unless I had something else lined up, and my wife has never done it. Other people at her work have done it and some of them are making more or the same as her for lower positions.

Then again her company does some stupid shit.

Tell them to forget the assistant, give you the xtra 50K a year..Pawn some of the work load onto some other bloke.. Or perhaps offer you a directorship?

shit hit the fan again today. I was told I need to make all the travel arrangements for trade shows from now on. i'm the only one the owner trusts. screw that.

I thought the northeast US was supposed to be progressive and non racist/sexist but your company makes 1950's Southern USA look like present day san francisco.
Ive literally never heard of so many innappropriate and lawsuit worthy incidents and a continous culture of fuckedupedness all at one place.

this company is owned by one person, who has never worked for anyone else in his life. He wants to be known as the smartest guy in the room at any cost, but also wants to be everybodies buddy. the result is that he makes horribly inappropriate comments all the time to "fit in" and be one of the guys (even though none of the "guys" there talk like that), and in the next breath, starts screaming that everyone is SO fucking stupid and inept that HE has to do everything.

then he doesn't do it.

I sent my resume to wyndham resorts last night, plus 2 places I found on craigs list. I'm going to send it to at least one company a day. and possibly call an agency.

so i sent out a memo that explained that I have an IUD and don't get that time of the month and if i'm not jovial, it's due to something else.

That's an incredibly dumb move on his part. Why managers make comments like that baffles me. What's the potential gain from saying something that dumb? It's all downside, which makes no sense

I just cant see this as being an actual situation no matter how hard I try. I keep envisioning that old man CEO in the Geico commercials that does innappropriate things to the gecko. Stilleto = gecko
