Results Of My 1st Meet

ExtraMile

High End Bro
Platinum
Today I entered my first proper powerlifting meet. It was the british championships, meaning everyone there had qualified in previous meets and been invited to it. When I tryed to do my qualifier the snow was so bad me and a few other guys had to all meet up in a gym with one of the referees and we qualified there, so it wasnt really a meet for me as we didnt even do it at the same time, I was the only one there when I went.

That just made the nerves worse, I got there and weighed in at 193.6lbs. I had dropped some weight last week I thought but it turned out the scales were a little light, and it was also 9.00am so I was gonna be a little lighter anyway since the week before I had weighed in at 197. Anyway after I weighed in my flight wasnt until about 2.00pm or maybe a bit later than that Im not sure, the waiting was horrible, I had brought my ipod to listen to but my headphones broke in the car, this also meant I couldnt listen to any music inbetween lifts to help psyche me up. So I was just pretty much sitting around. I couldnt eat because I was so nervous I was trembling and twitching the whole time and literally pissing abuot every 30mins. I managed to eat an apple, a banana, and drink alot. I drank a litre of full cream milk with 10g of creatine mixed in and some needtobuildmuscle.com whey protein mixed in too that I had made the night before.... oh yah and I drank 120g of carbs via sports drinks LOL. There was a break between flights 4 and 5, I was in flight 5, the break was meant to be 15mins but over ran and ended up being like 25mins, the suspense was killing me and made me feel ill by the time I got up there I was shitting myself especially as I was up first in the group.

Anyway my flight came up and I was first in the flight, it was the 198 weight class and they were all young men, 20-35 years old and then one 83 year old man! He was the only person I beat in my weight class lol. Anyway nobody my age had ever managed to qualify for this weight class before so they hadnt managed to bench 82.5kg or more in competition, that meant if I managed to lift more than that then it would be a british record! My weights went like this:

1st (opener): 70kg (154lbs) - nailed it easy
2nd: 82.5kg (181.5lbs) - miss
3rd: 90kg (198lbs) - nailed it again not too hard either
4th: 95kg (209lbs) - pass, kinda hard!

so the record is now at 95kg or 209lbs and belongs to me! The thing is, the 2nd attempt I forgot to wait for the start signal, but still smashed the weight it was easy, the only real struggle was the fourth attempt which was 209lbs but it wasnt like a max attempt or 1rm or anything. My original plan was to go 70kg, 80kg, 90kg, 92.5kg but had a talk with Haydn the SHW who has been helping me and we decided to change it a bit as I was smashing through my warmups easily and didnt put my wrist wraps on until the 3rd attempt.

I didnt bother to wear a belt.

The only other T1 catagory guy - T1 means teenage 1, so the 14-15 year old weight class (this is what I competed in) was a lad who entered the 145kg weight class!! 145kg is 319lbs! The dude was huge! About 6'5 and fat as fuck! Anyway he only benched 44lbs more than me! And he was way heavier than me and due to his size his ROM was way shorter than mine cause his big chest was so high up, I would have thought he would have been stronger than that and especially as he struggled with the weight alot more than I struggled with mine I was suprised.

So Iv got a trophy now and some pics, didnt manage to get any video though.

First few pics are of the benching although they aint great quality, the next ones are of my getting my trophy, then a picture with the president of the federation, and the final one is a picture of my with Haydn and another SHW who I talked to at the meet and helped me a bit. As you can see Im dwarfed next to them but iv actually gained quite alot of bodyweight leading up to this meet and I alot of people - competitors and organisers said how big I was for 15, and I had to bring proof of my age because I was told the judges and stuff would think I was older. Haydn is also going to help me with my bench technique as he thinks it could be improved to help push my numbers up. I guess all these disgusting scrambled eggs and chicken meals are starting to pay off :) lol

oh yeah and I have been invited to go to Russia for the european championships, but I dont think I will be attending.

Congrats EM you did awesome, only up from here bro. Now if you'll only turn fully to the dark side(powerlifting), who knows what you'll do.

Cheers,
Scotsman

fucking awesome man!!!!! i can't wait to say my deadlift and/or squat is higher than the british world record holder's bench press for your age group :)

nah dude, keep doing it up! hopefully if you bring your squat and dead up enough you'll be able to compete in those as well.

Thanks man, I cant wait to compete in deadlifts!

Dont you mean you will be able to lift more than the record for someone 2 years younger than you? lol. The 16-17 age group (yours) is very differant to 14-15 and besides your 18 this year right? So then you would move up to 18-19 and then the weights and records start to get really heavy. Besides mine is only the record in single lifts competition, there is already a record in the full powerlifting meets where you do all 3 lifts instead of just one and that record is actually higher than mine.

besides I told you before I will never let you total more than me on the big three :)

Hey EM - Congrats bro! I know it was your first meet, but try to develop a technique to settle your nerves.
Being nervous for hours like that can be draining on your system and could impact your lifts in a bad way.

Great job! Thanks for the update on how it went.

Lol lol lol lol about your k message! Tis true though:D What will you have to be deadlifting and squatting before you can qualify for a full 3 lift meet?

i have to total 340kg or 748lbs to qualify for a full 3 lift meet in the 198 weight class but Im gonna move up to the 220's so idk what I have to total for that, probably around 790-800, soon I will move up to 16-17 though so it will be hella hard in the next weight class up AND the next age group...

thanks man, I know what your saying, when I had completed the lifts a while later I realised how hungry I was! I went to a macdonalds on the way home and ate myself full lol. I knew I would be nervous cause its my first time though but it was crazy I was trembling and twitching and my heart was beating so hard in the 10mins before I was called up my chest was twitching with the beats and you could see my heart beat through my jumper :worried:

So it looks to me like you are pretty close to being able to qualift, assuming you had a 215 bench, 319 deadlift, and 237 squat, that would give you a 771 total, pretty close to qualifying for the 220's.

Good fucking shit EM.
someday kids are going to look at your legendary training journal thread when you're a pro power lifter!

keep it up big guy!

Yeah buddy! BIg props to you lil homie and yes, 190+lbs IS a lot for a 15 year old. Shit, I didn't hit that weight till I was about 18 or 19. I don't know man, I think you're gonna have to ride out this powerlifting thing brah because you're doing pretty good so far.
Keep up the good work and I am sure you can tell this but I gotta say it anyway, we are all very proud of you!

thanks scotman I didnt see this post, yeah the only reason I didnt do all three lifts is when training for the meet I had injured my back and my squats and deads suffered so they would have dropped my total down too low to qualify, but I could still bench the whole time I was injured so I thought entering just one lift was better than missing it all

Very good work! Especially without any "official" coaching.

Just as a point of reference for the future, but a powerlifting meet is where all 3 lifts are done. Yours was a specialist or push meet. I'm not taking aways from what you did, I just wanted to let you know the difference.

Like I said, well done.

yeah I know it wasnt a full powerlifting meet, I didnt call it a powerlifting meet in my first post did I? well if I did I didnt mean to...

thanks anyway :)

well done bro... you are an inspiration even to the older lifters... i get fired up over success stories, and your accomplishments are just that...
i wish i would have had your mindset/maturity at your age... i would have probably been more successful in life...
hope to see you do a full meet soon...

Thanks DB!

thanks moya Im sure you could inspire alot of lifters too with your lifts especially at your bodyweight! I may be doing a push/pull later in the year, Im not sure about a full meet though but I would like to do one...

Awesome work EM. You have so much time ahead of you to just push and push and advance and advance. I can tell your hooked just like I got hooked on competing this last year. Congratulations again to you on a fine job. Eat, grow and be strong!!!

Hey EM sorry I missed this till now lil brutha. Way to go bro. You really got your shit together for a young dude. Keep training hard bro. Keep Ole SB up to date dude.

good work bro!!! why wouldnt you go to the championships!?

attack your dreams
thanks subz

I would get slaughtered there! And my nerves would kill me too, especially as I wouldnt know anyone and not many people would speak english much, neither of the two guys who were talking to me and helping me this time were going to go even though they got invited, and its not like you get your trip payed for or anything, it would be expensive and I dont think it would be worth it, I wanna do some full meets first and I wanna get back to my proper training now. Maybe next year though ...

@strongbow, thanks bro Ill keep you updated along with everyone else. I got told there might be a push/pull being held in october time this year so that may be my next competition, although Ill be 16 and unless between that time I have decided to cut some bf then I will def. be in the 220's or maybe even more by then....
