You should try a more subtle approach when cruzing for chicks MB...maybe something like, "Didn't I see you in the free clinic on Watson St the other day?"

The rate is a lot lower than 1 in 4. I think HPV is quite common (maybe 1 in 4), although most people don't notice it. I don't think I have any STDs. Never have.

I have those fuckers you get on your lip, courtesy of my ex gf. What a pile of garbage ...

Anyway, they don't come up often. And when I do feel one, I have this ointment crap and it's gone after a few days. No one even notices.

Hell no and I can't imagine having herpes and trying to get layed or have a serious girl. I bet it would be hell trying to explain it to a perspective score. If some chick lied to me about her STD status and I got some shit from her like herpes I would have to seriously fight the urge to kill her. This shit happened to a friend of mine and it has really got him down in the dumps, great guy and now he has to deal with that shit, pisses me off.

The 1 in 4 figure for genital herpes comes from the CDC website based on their own statistics. Someone told me the figure once, I said bullshit and went to the site myself. The figure for oral herpes is something like 4 of 5 people and I do have oral herpes. On an interesting side note, one can give their partner genital herpes by performing oral sex while suffering an oral outbreak. I get an outbreak maybe once or twice a year for a week or so.

I had herpes, but my crabs didnt like them encroaching on their territory. There was a long drawn out battle, which left my pubic region a mess. But the crabs won out in the end, proving they are the one lone power in my pants.

i am immune. truthfully, i am. i had unprotected sex for a couple years with someone who had herpes. That was many years ago, and i have never once had a symptom. I normally have a remarkable immune system for such things (with the exception of food poisoning, i have not been sick in 5 years.) so i was not surprised.

Also, i had one of the tests that does not require an outbreak done, they only had the tests in about a dozen places in the us at the time, and they supposedly have a 95%+ accuracy, and that came out negative, too...

HPV is roughly 80% of the college population.

It is scary out there...

I have "herpes of convenience". Meaning if I get a trick home and undress him and lose interest... I can always take a peek down my pants and go "uh-oh... what a time for a flare up"

Nice.

So, do they go quietly with that reply or does it require oral to send them on there way?

I feel the exact same way. Which is why I have sworn-of second hard hoes, and now only date soon to be deflowered virgins. It's the only way to really be sure these days.

The figure for type-2 (genital) herpes is 1 in 6.

I have seen thousands upon thousands of patients and I swear it seems more like 1 in a thousand.

just my 2 cents...

i have a STUPID question about herpes.. how can it be transmitted? and how can it be stopped (condoms?)? can you get herpes giving oral? getting oral?

MB

IF YOU TOUCH AN INFECTED AREA OR IF AN PERSON HAS SOME TYPE OF FLARE UP AND CONTACTS YOU. CONDOMS DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST IT. 90% OF PEOPLE HAVE THE KIND THAT OCCURS ORALLY. THOSE ARE ALSO BROUGHT ON BY STRESS AND TOO MUCH SUNLIGHT BURNING THE LIPS.

I take Acyclovir daily to prevent outbreaks....

I thought I had it around 23 or so...turned out to be strep throat....sucked either way.

I dont have herpes, but i kow oral herpes aka cold sores are very common.
This is from an article i found online.

General Cold Sore / Fever Blister Information
A cold sore, or fever blister, begins as a tender, small bump that later turns into a painful blister. Cold sores are very contagious, very common and usually appear on the mouth and/or lips. Studies show that herpes simplex virus 1, the virus responsible for cold sores, is found in 30 to 60 percent of children by the age of 10. Once contracted, the virus remains hidden in the body in a dormant state until it is triggered to reactivate and cause a cold sore. The virus can be passed any time during an outbreak - from the first tingle until the affected area is completely healed. Adjacent lymph nodes may also become swollen.

this is from another website.

What Triggers Cold Sores
Cold sores are usually caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1
(HSV-1). The HSV-1 virus is part of the same virus family that causes chickenpox (varicella-zoster), shingles (herpes zoster), and genital herpes (herpes simplex virus type 2). Once the HSV-1 virus is in the body, it stays there in the nerves and never completely goes away.

HSV-1 infections are extremely common - it is estimated that 80% to 90% of the US population age 50 years and older has been infected with the virus. HSV-1 is very contagious and can spread through physical contact, such as kissing.

The virus usually stays dormant in your body until something "triggers" it to the surface in the form of a cold sore.

Some of these triggers may include:

Stress, tiredness, or being "run down"
A cold, fever, or the flu
Exposure to the sun
Cold weather
Hormonal changes, such as from menstruation or pregnancy
Trauma, such as shaving cuts or dental work
A key to managing your cold sores is knowing what your triggers are. If you want to fight your cold sore virus you need to be prepared. Keep track of your trigger patterns so that you can take charge of your cold sores.

I got chlamydia in college from an asshole boyfriend that cheated on me. How did I know he cheated? Unless aliens abducted me in the middle of the night I knew where MY GENITALIA was at all times. All of the sudden I started showing symptoms. Went to the doc. When he gave the diagnosis I was so shocked I said, "But I haven't been with anyone other than my boyfriend. How could I have an STD?!"

DUH - It was because HE had trouble keeping HIS GENITALIA to himself... or maybe the aliens had abducted him. LOL You should have seen the "deer in headlights" expression on his face when he was told.

Had I not had symptoms and went to the doc for treatment I would have eventually become sterile thus robbing me of the ability to have children later on.

Yes, I was REALLY REALLY STUPID. After I got that little wake-up call, condoms became not-so-daunting anymore.

Nope.

And i'm not saying it cuz i wanna look cool on the internet. I seriously don't have anything. zippo. Knock on wood. :)

now if only i can get rid of this damn acne!!!

http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/stdherp.htm

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 45 million people in the United States ages 12 and older, or 1 out of 5 of the total adolescent and adult population, are infected with HSV-2.

and there are up to one million new cases each year.

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/h/herpes/intro.htm

Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum.

http://www.genitalherpes.com/info/about/what/facts.jsp

Symptoms of genital herpes can first appear a long time after the person has contracted the disease—you may have contracted it from a sexual partner long ago. Your partner may have genital herpes without knowing it—he or she may have passed it on to you without showing signs of the disease.

http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/herpesgenital1/a/genherpessympt.htm

Unfortunately, most people who have genital herpes don't know it because they never have any symptoms, or they do not recognize any symptoms they might have. When there are symptoms, they can be different in each person.

And if you have genital herpes and have sex with a person who is infected with HIV, your chances for catching HIV increase.

Do I have you paranoid yet?

Nope. I've never had anything. I get tested for everything one can get tested for every year. I figure even if you know what you've been up to, you don't know what your partner's been up to for sure. Better safe than sorry.

I do know someone on the boards that has it and she does tell people about it.

(no, I won't tell so fuck off)

90% of the usa population as hsv-1. the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores. in fact, 60% of the population has it by the age of 12. :worried:

Ya know I've noticed a shitload of people with them recently. Once you know what to look for, you see it everywhere.

I just had a complete STD test (blood, urine, & cotton swab) done last week.

Called a couple days ago and she said everything was negative.

Would that pick herpes up, or do you have to be having an outbreak for it to show up? I had a raw looking place years back on my peepee, but went away in a day. Never had anything show up otherwise, but that made me paranoid.

I think the vote is squewed for some reason. If any of you have had German Meassles, you got Herpies. There are several other deseases which are a strain of the Herpies Virus. You may not get outbreaks, and they may not be transmissable, you gotz them. that cracked lip in the sun or from winter's cold may also be a sign you have the virus. I think Chicken Pox is also a Herpies strain; although, most people under 40 never had it thanks to vacinations.

Good questions regarding the strains and such. Can HSV-1 be spread to other body parts? My understanding is the outbreak is only in the oral area. HSV-2 can be on anything where you touched the infection. Can a blood test or other test actually detect HSV-1 or HSV-2? In both cases, outbreaks last about 8 to 12 days without special treatment, and during that period it is transmittable.

I gotz #1, and know when it is starting by the feel on the lips. Contact prohibited after that. Sun and Stress are the 2 main triggers. Lots of lip balm for me always.

Odds are you already have it and just don't show any symptoms.

There are now two vaccines available this year vaccinating against Shingles (a herpes strain) and hpv specific to women potentially leading to cervical cancer. Both vaccines are approved and are awaiting final launch within 6 months.

Other vaccines associated with these diseases are only a few years away.

I have never had a cold sore as in the large ones on the outside of the lips. I have , however, had small whiteish blisters inside my lower lip sometimes when I get too much sun. Is that a type of cold sore/ herpes ?

Yes.

Too much sunlight is a common trigger.

My wife and I both have it. I gave it to her completely out of ignorance. Its a long story but its been almost 10 years and we get breakouts maybe 1 or 2 times per year so its not that bad.

i always figured they get these statistics from a college or some shit cuz thats just to fucking high of a percentage. its like if im in a group of 10 people 2 out of the ten are likely to have herpes. i don't know if i beleive that shit.

so if you're haveing unprotected sex and one of you has the virous but its not in its breakout stage can the other person contract it, or can you only contract it when its actually on the surface of the skin?

no dude

shedding of the virus can occur at any time, regardless

you really need to read up some more as opposed to posting on a forum

"Herpes is most easily spread when a sore is present, but, it is also often spread at other times too. Some people notice itching, tingling or other sensations before they see anything on their skin. These are called "Prodromal Symptoms" and they warn that virus may be present on the skin. Herpes is most likely to be spread from the time these first symptoms are noticed until the area is completely healed and the skin looks normal again. Sexual contact (oral, vaginal, or anal) is very risky during this time."

http://www.herpes.com/Transmission.shtml

This part addresses you the most:

Can Herpes Be Transmitted Without Symptoms?

"Yes! Sometimes those who know they are infected spread the virus between outbreaks, when no signs or symptoms are present. This is called "Asymptomatic Transmission."
Research also shows that herpes simplex infections are often spread by people who don't know they are infected. These people may have symptoms so mild they don't notice them at all or else don't recognize them as herpes."

I got skerred in the past and did my research, do yours....

that was the first thing i asked my girl, it was hard too do becouse we only new each other for 1 month . my mom introduced us to each other. as soon as i found out she was a vergin, and had never even kissed, i told my parents
the next day i was gonna ask her to marry me.....4 months later we got hitched. and no i dont have that shit. also i dont believe 1 in 4 do, thats crazy.

I dated a chick for 10 years off and on, even lived with her, she had it, and I never got it. Even saw the sores, weird, because she would break out about once every 10 months. Wasn’t that big of a deal, but then again I don’t have it so maybe it would be a big deal if I did.

the only way to know if you carry the virus is to have a antibody test, even thats not 100% accurate because some people dont produce the antibodies and are still carriers.

many people never get sores, its estimated that over 80% of the population is anti-body positive for one of the HSV strains. Actual carrier rates may be higher.

as a note derivatives of the HSV virus are being used as vectors for a number of high level treatments in development, including gene therapy.

From www.herpes.com
Oral herpes, an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the American adult population. 20 percent, over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes, also caused by the herpes simplex virus, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens.

8 out of 10 have oral herpes
1 in 5 have genital

Chicken pox is a herpes virus.
Mononucleosis is a herpes virus.
Shingles is also a herpes virus.

I had encephalitis last year and had to get comprehensive workups from an epidemiologist, including multiple type specific herpes tests, and to my amazement I dont have either HSV1 or HSV2.

Here's some pleasant news too, the leading cause of encephalitis in the U.S. is our pal herpes. Yah.

im in the military medical field and ill say that the amount of people i see in the clinic when we arent deployed would be more like 8 of 10 have it.

Everyone's immune system can deal with any virus if it is given the means to do so... (This means getting your blood in an alkaline state and eliminating crap like simple sugars and toxic chemicals added to our food supply such as asparatame, chlorine, and MSG) Don't EVER believe the hype from pharmacutical companies that say these viruses are always "with you for life". Total rubbish.

Think about this: How many times have you had a cold in your life? Surely everytime you get a new cold it is not the same "old" cold virus returning that is still dormant in your system but a new strain. Have you ever had a wart on your hand or foot when you were a kid that NEVER returned? Your telling me this HPV virus is "still dormant"?? Come on.

Anyone who has the exact same re-occuring virus needs to clean up their body as much as possible from all toxins and let their immune system do its job. Yes, some are more stubborn than others (such as herpes viruses) and may require additional assistance in the form of supplements but they are not impossible for your immune system to find and destroy. :)

Had a scare six months ago. I was dating this chick for a couple weeks and she always wanted to give me bj's but not sex. Didn't think much of it untill after she finally gave it up and proceded to tell me right afterwards she had herpes. Needless to say I broke up with her on the spot (more for starting the relationship with serious dishonesty) and went into panic mode. Reasearched my ass off and found out that even though I wore a condom I could have still gotten in from skin contact on not covered areas. Anyway never got any symptoms and after six weeks got my blood test. Everythings good to go, but I feel like i dodged a bullet. I'm recently divorced and I hate having to deal with this shit again.

You are right about a person's immune system keeping a virus in check. However, some viruses, like herpes and HPV, do remain dormant in your body for many, many years just like tuberculosis bacteria can remain dormant in lung tissue for many years only to reemerge when a person's immune system is compromised.

Herpes claims residence in the dorsal root ganglia of your spine and resurfaces when your body's immune system can no longer keep it in check. This is why people tend to have herpetic outbreaks in the same spots -- the same dorsal root ganglia become activated. People who have had the shingles before have a herpes variant (herpes zoster) that remains dormant in their dorsal root ganglia of the spine, and resurfaces just like type herpes to cause an outbreak (shingles).

Viruses such as the common cold (adenovirus, rhinovirus) do not have the necessary genetic material and proteins to remain dormant in your system.

I compare viruses to illegal immigrants that immigrate to our country. Some get caught and are exported -- those are like the viruses that are caught by the immune system and destroyed. Some aliens manage to live in the US for years -- those are like the viruses that are dormant. To say that no virus can stay dormant in your system is like saying that no illegal immigrant can remain in our country undetected.

I agree with you 100% that a strong immune system can prevent a reemergence of the virus. Eating a healthy diet (lots of fruits and vegetables, not just low fat foods), reducing stress, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, etc. are all ways to keep herpes outbreaks from reoccuring.

I hear the amino acid Lysine can help slow an outbreak.

Also there has been some who claim food grade hydrogen peroxide (I think potency is about 30 - 40 % -- much higher than the typical hydrogen peroxide used on minor wounds to disinfect) can actually get to the root of the stubborn virus and kill it by oxidizing. (by this theory, viruses cannot withstand much exposure to oxidized environments) Research these methods of application heavily because food grade hydrogen peroxide is no joke and can cause damage if not used carefully. I am not sure what method is used to be honest.... just passing on something I heard from a homeopathic doctor.

Lol, I like your analogy......

1 in 4 people may have any form of herpes, but Herpes simplex II is completely different from your average cold sore

my wife works in medical research, monitored by the fda.. 1 in 5 positive HIV tests are negative, and it's about the same ratio vise versa. they do soo much testing that they have a good gauge on the ratios, they have problems pretty often with fucked up diagnosis. the new hotness is genital warts and hpv...that shit's the new epidemic.. drug co's are all over it.. she's testing like 5 new drugs as we speak.

she was flipping two weeks ago, this dude tested positive for Western HIV, full blown AIDS...she's there with the Dr breaking the news to the guy, he takes it alright..almost as if he suspected it right? Turns out the test was botched up for some reason, they re-ran it and he came out CLEAN, NOTHING, guys is spotless.. Been two weeks and NOBODY has heard from him, his family thinks he skipped the country to see his kids in Mexico.

women are more misdiagnosed for type two. there symptoms make it very difficult unless the blood test is done. pains in the pevlic region which is a symptom can throw even the best of physicians off.
