Herpes Outbreaks (Meds rather ineffective)

Snarling Force

I've had herpes from as early as I can remember. My Mom has it and most likely gave it to me and my brother as well.

Anyways, I get cold sores about 3-4 times per year. I've been taking Valtrex 500mg and its rather ineffective. I still have the whole sore and go through the whole bullshit shedding and scabbing over although it is a bit less than before taking Valtrex. I only take 500mg ever 8 hours, but this is because I simply cannot afford to take more than that. With my insurance, 10 pills is 40 bucks! The doctor said I could be taking up to 1500mg at a time, but I just don't have that kind of money.

So my brother has this same bullshit affliction and takes Acyclovir 800mg at a time and says it works awesome for him. Its way cheaper, 10 bucks for 130 200mg pills. So yesterday I got a script for Acyclovir and I've been taking it like crazy and it seems to have an even lesser effect on this piece of bullshit virus on my lip. I hate this so bad and knowing there is no cure and I have to live with outbreaks until I'm dead is upsetting.

What are your experiences with the medications for herpes? I mean today I've already taken 2400mg of Acyclovir and I can just feel the cold sore on my lip festering, as if nothing is going on. At least with the Valtrex, the festering feeling would stop shortly after taking a pill.

Anyone care to share on their experiences?

Herpes outbreaks only occur when your immune system is weakened.

How much stress are you under? Stress increases cortisol levels, which can compromise your immune system.

How much time do you spend in the sunlight, and do you use lip balm with high-grade SPF (at least 45) when outdoors? Sunlight has been shown to increase herpetic outbreaks.

Do you eat a healthy diet (not just low fat, but high in fruits and vegetables with plenty of antioxidants -- broccoli, citrus fruits, etc.)?
