Does anybody work in trades? (welding, construction, mechanic, etc...)

Believe me they make plenty. As long as the product they make is in high demand and selling price in the market doesn't drop its mad profit. That's why even though the price on oil is so high, the refineries are making record profits the last couple years. At our plant its the same. We make about 4 times what we spend to run and we are a really small plant(its all figured in the production cost and then marked up a certain percent). Guess it all depends on the plant, I hear a lot of these "greener" plants are mostly government funded, and around they have also had quite a few get bought out and some shut down.
Some also get tax breaks. We on the other hand pay an obsurd amount of local taxes to the community because of the hazard.

What they make profit-wise isn't important long term. If their ROW counterpart is operating at a substantially lower cost, it's just a matter of time before they die.

Um, how old are you? Apprenticeships take a long time.

And none of the trades are highly paid, man. You can move into the solid middle class with many of them, but that's it.

:cow:

I make about 70k a year. I'll work my way up to making 100k a year in the next 4-5 years. You think I can make more getting into a trade?

More? Probably not, unless you put in a substantial amount of OT as that's where many skilled tradespeople make their $$$. BC tradespeople generally get paid highest, but the cost of living can be pretty crazy, even when compared to Ontario. I worked as a skilled tradesman, glass cutter, in MB for over a decade before starting up a web dev biz after college. I'd never go back. Grueling conditions (incredibly high heat and humidity, lifting and manipulating 30,000 + lbs per shift) for less pay, no thanks.

i can tell you that making more than a 100k in trade work proly won't happen, unless you live in nyc or some major union city...and then the 100k won't stretch as far anyway.
when i was pounding nails i worked with a few ex-white collar dudes, a accountant and a financial bro.
both got out of the white collar world cause they were sick of the office lifestyle, and enjoyed getting dirty and putting on a pair of pouches everyday.
that's what i liked about the work, you get to use your hands, play with tools and machinery, and you often went home with the satisfaction of knowing you put in a good day of labor.
but the money won't be as good as what you currently make...but the piece of mind and job satisfaction may be better, and that's why you would consider making the switch, not cause of more loot.
you seem unhappy with your profession, so maybe it would be a good move...get into something clean like electrical or commercial plumbing, stay away from laboring or brick/concrete work, unless you wanna do bull work

That's the biggest problem... The cost of living rides on the the average income for the area, and vice-versa. If somebody made $100K/year in Missoula, MT, they'd be living really nice! But make $100K a year in Los Angeles, and be lucky to have a 2-bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood, and a middle-priced car, and not be running up debts. Or MAYBE a 3-bedroom house ($750,000 in a medium-income decent part of Los Angeles), and plan on working 'til 75 to pay it off.

The economy is all SNAFU'd.

american workers have the highest productivity of any country in the world.

and we consume more than any other country.

This is what stevemi has previously said about us trade workers

"if you are worried about mexicans taking your job then you must not be very bright or you are a plumber or some job that requires a 75 IQ."

"i have no interest in being a plumber.

i prefer to use my brain, not clean crap out of toilets.

next time i need u to clean out my toilet i will give ya a call bra

you sound like a typical dumb republican redneck Plumber Joe type. atleast in your case I hope you actually pay your taxes. not that you make enough where you aren't in the 5% bracket. LOL."

"bartender send that girl over there a drink............. so whats your name sweetie?"

"my name is Jessica"

"so Jessica come here often?"

"yeah i do, so what do you do for a living hun?"

"I'm a plumber"

"ooooh baby, take me back to your place"
you get the idea...the new face of elite?
