Does anybody work in trades? (welding, construction, mechanic, etc...)

^^ In chicago electricians are in the mid $40 range per hr. As well as Ironworkers, fitters, plumbers, sheetmetal workers, sprinklerfitters. The brickies are about $38-$39 and laborers are almost $36 per hr.

yea the MI union scale was definetly lower than some bigger cities, esp in bumblefuk where i was.

I don't know anything about construction -- I freely admit that.

But at those rates, how could a US-built plant ever compete with a foreign one? If you compound those rates with other union-related productivity losses (I.e. Featherbedding), a US-built plant is going to carry much more capital outlay and depreciation cost than its ROW counterpart.

I used to be in the consumer electronics repair industry (Mitsubishi & Sony factory authorized repair tech), but quit that about 10 years ago when it got to be a rotten job with even more rotten pay. I'm a qualified electrician also, but never worked in it or held a CA license for it.

american workers have the highest productivity of any country in the world.

and we consume more than any other country.

You aren't going to make an electrician 10x more effective than his ROW counterpart. Even if tools and training gave him 2x (or let's say 3x), it still won't bridge the gap.

That was just what they see on the check plunky. Add an additional 10-15 dollars per hour for their insurance, retirement and annuity packages for most. To be hones I don't know. I was just happy to get the money when it was there. Also I worked in corrupt chicago (and still do) FWIW. Now I get paid more for less.

We almost built a plant in Illinois about four years ago. The unions controlled all the permitting, but if you agreed to use them they had politicians lined-up to give you the difference in cost (it was sizable) back as grants (enterprise zones). It was a remarkably clever way to channel taxpayer money directly to the unions.

I know when we did govt jobs such as building a new school or an addition onto a public school the contractor was guaranteed 20% profit from his bid. This was before the barry era though. At one point I could walk off a job and have another the next morning making the same money.

Wow, that's a lot of replies...

I was wondering what's a good trade to get into part time and perhaps eventually move into full times...someone highly paid. I have a good paying job, so it's gotta be a good career move too...

Brainstorming

Um, how old are you? Apprenticeships take a long time.

And none of the trades are highly paid, man. You can move into the solid middle class with many of them, but that's it.
