What does it mean to "know it in your heart"

If you're talking about my post in OBL thread...I was joking...lol. I was trying to be a dork. It's a dorky phrase people use that means to use your intuition.
 
Lol come on bro, how many symbolic phrases are there in the English language ?

I feel it "in my brain" or "front lobes" or whatever, doesn't have the same ring.

and shouldn't we be past all the bullshit phrases though? Hell, to know it in your soul is even better, right?

Also, no worries Cindy, it just reminds me of expressions like these that we use that when we really listen to what we're saying, it makes no sense.

There is an element in human understanding that transcends mere intelligence. To 'know something in your heart' alludes to this level of understanding.

And I'm encouraged to know a couple of you have been in church enough to know that ditty.

As dorky as this sounds I absolutely love that song. There was about a month or so where Abby's pediatrician suggested Abby might have West Syndrome and during that time between that appoinment and the EEG when I sang that song to her I'd get tears in my eyes...it made me feel better and gave me some peace. I sing tons of songs to Abby..not just church nursery songs..but I sing to her Good Morning from Dancing in the Rain and Feed the Birds...Mary Poppins....lol

Just because it doesn't make sense physiologically doesn't mean it doesn't make sense culturally. the term heart, not necessarily meaning your physical heart, is often just a representation of a person's very inner being. In many cultures it's considered the epicenter of someone's compassion or goodness. It's not just in english, look at any of the romance languages and you have the same terms being used. It's pretty much just a homonym

there's no other term you can really change that to, and express the same meaning.

this is just the soon to be doctor in you showing itself lol. nothing wrong with that, but clearly this is something that would bother someone in the medical profession more than the average person

during my practice in college I had a patient who insisted she talked to God, my teacher wanted me to label her as schizophrenic, it was a pretty hard case mostly because it was not a psychotherapy class it was a clinical class so all I could do was run tests on her...

That is what I thought it was. In my books I had read that they were supposed to grow out of it..she seemed to get worse and would cause strange nodding or would knock her over while sitting up. I got a vid of it and took it to doc at well baby visit...she grew out of whatever it was. I looked at the vid this morning...idk what it was..but whatever it was..she is fine now.

I'm not sure why some feel the need to mock people who have beliefs about callings from god, especially when those callings are not doing anyone any harm.

My mom left a nursing career at a hospital where she was the head of the infectious disease department to be a priest because of one of those callings and I'd bet my last dollar she's more sane, kind, smart and all around fan-fucking-tastic than most of the people in this thread. I've certainly never heard her make fun of or question the sanity of anyone who believed something different than her when it came to matters of faith.

She's a great woman who was intensely loved by all her parishioners and did a lot of really great things in her time as a minister, I dare anyone to put their lives up next to hers in comparison.
