For those in Canada and the US, what is your take, opinion or comment about these countries allowing high #'s of immigrants to enter.
The street I live on (in suburban Montreal) is about 80% newly landed immigrants.
Of course Canada has the room for more, but not the resources.
Many immigrants who come to Canada go right on welfare and most stay on welfare.
Of course both Canada and the US are built on immigration, but when should it stop? When it enough enough?

The only source I have is word of mouth and from what I see/read/ and hear on a daily basis in the media etc.....!My best friend who is a Muslim from Kuwait came to Canada in 1986. She was told before she came to this country that Canada was like winning the lottery. That Canada gives you free health care and money (welfare) after 3 months. It's true!
After 3 months all immigrants are allowed unlimited health care and to collect welfare? Is that fair? I don't think it is!
Listen, I have many immigrants on my street and in my community that work their butts off and go to school, own their own biz's etc...but I do believe a large portion of immigrants take advantage of the system.

BIGGER population = BIGGER opportunities = STRONGER economy.

The US has 10x Canada's population, and lower unemployment. Bigger economy, bigger industries, more of everything.

If Canada wants to compete on the big stage and improve it's standard of living - it NEEDS at least 20 million more immigrants. Heck, Canada has tons of oil reserves, and can supply to the US and take over middle-east oil, but guess what! It DOESN'T have the manpower! dumb them.

As the population increases, you get more stores, doctors, malls, houses, retail, govt jobs - all which increases the economy cuz the govt has to release MORE cash into the economy (more people = more need for circulating cash).

Take an economics class. Why do you think bigger cities have more opportunities and riches than smaller cities? Population.

now if your argument is we should get more non-criminal, productive immigrants - i agree with you. Our mexicans are a burden on the economy and society.

We have a huge group of Arab immigrants that are violent and tribal. I like having the Dearborn Police between them and my area.

I agree there could be more of a population, but I don't agree that Canada allows immigrants in and gives them free health care and welfare after 3 months. You want to come to Canada, find a job, and pay for your health care until you become an actual Canadian citizen!
A few months ago, there was a story about a guy who is a landed immigrant and his daughter was ill. He knew she was ill when he brought her to Montreal. He took her to the hospital for care and then refused to pay the hospital bill. He was only here 1 month so he did not qualify for all the freebies we give out. He went to the media and DEMANDED that the tax payers foot the bill. He got no sympathy! I'm happy his little girl was ok, but to DEMAND that he did not have to pay was insane!
The consensus here in Montreal (I won't speak for other cities) is that this place is one big "all you can eat" for certain immigrants!
My Grandparents (like I am sure most of yours are) were immigrants. They came to this country and they were not given a free ride. Nothing came for free like it does today!
This is not to say the immigrants of today do not work hard, they do, but they will tend to be less inclined to work harder b/c hey, welfare is great!
My angst comes from the recent terrorism, the wars going on (in always the same countries) and the fact that a TON of money is taken off my check every month to foot the bill to give non-Canadians a free ride!

WE don't have that many problems here, with immigrants, yet. I have some issues, but they are more assimilation stuff(learn the leanguage). Most immigrants I've known personally are hard workers.
Honestly, the people I have a problem with are the 2nd or more generation teens with an entitlement attitude.
I know a young couple, early 20's, white. Between the 2 of them, they bring in 35,000a year. They want to start selling stollen goods to make more money. WTF??? Go by the local high school & see all the punks with their low hanging jeans & superlong pastel muscleshirts with some sportszero's # on it. They are all un-accented white's blacks, & asians who watch too much MuchMusic. Their accented bretheren are all out working.
The one thing I despise about the U.S. Canadian relationship is that ghetto glamourization. Whatever the trend is in the U.S., it will be in CAnada in 6 mos to a year.
And since we're talking about hate. Why can't Tim Horton's either make a cup lid that doesn't fucking leak, or teach their servers to put the mouth opening at the cup crease. I hate getting leaked on.
And another thing. This curreent government is the first one to do anything meaningful with military capital aquisitions in years, yet when the shit hits the fan (Lesbanon), Everybody is all over the P.M. for not speeding things up.

I have no data to back up my comments. Just what I've seen around my city.
My own thoughts on what our current immigration policies should be: Any one with a skill, trade, or degree should be fast tracked. People with obvious means(lotsa cash). People claiming refugee status should be thoroughly investigated (eliminate criminals. Just because they wanna kill you back home, isn't our problem, if it's because you commited a criminal act under their laws that calls for execution). Have some sort of quota system for different regions of the world, whereby others may immigrate, but on a available space basis.
From what little bit I know & others have told me, one of the main problems here is just too many, too fast. We don't have the infrastructure to support the influx. Especially regarding housing, we don't have enough low income housing for our existing residents, let alone adding more.

My husbands Christmas bonus check is cut in half to support people that are on welfare. And with all these immigrants that I know, only 1 family was using governments insurance (cuz they were refugees) - but as soon as the husband got his insurance coverage from work, they canceled the government one.
