MsBev, I hear that alot, and to an extent I agree with you. IMO, cheating is breaking the rules. When I compete, the rule is that I can use certain types of equipment, and so do. Actually the rules say I can use a double layer brief and a double layer suit at the same time to squat. My squat, however was done in a single ply suit. So I haven't taken full advantage of the rules yet, but as I progress, I probably will.
I do consider it cheating when reporting numbers though. That's why I specifically asked for clarification at the top of the thread. I benched a 270 in competition, but I'm not ballsy (or stupid) enough to think that I can do that raw. My raw bench is 70 pounds lower due to my bench shirt, a belt, and wrist wraps.
I will always admire the impressive numbers of a raw lifter...and I know some of my peers would argue with me on that. I swore that I would lift 1200 raw some day, and I didn't mean tomorrow, but I do think that would be nice. It's just something I need to prove to myself. I don't want to only be strong when my entire body is augmented with polyester, denim, spandex, chalk, leather, severe constriction......that's not me. That's just what I do for an even playing field at a comp. In the gym, I never use more than chalk and wrist wraps...occassionally my belt when going for a max PR.
Long story, short...I see your point, and for the most part you're preaching to the choir.
