WTF Texas??

She's 21 weeks now due to the legal battle, that sucks. I can see his point in the sense that she had made a medical decision and at the same time maybe he doesn't want another child reminding him of her, maybe he can't handle another child, etc and giving it into adoption is also difficult, so fulfilling her wishes fulfills his... pretty fucked up either way.

You actually read it? Fuck, I'm so mad right now.

she was 14 weeks tho, that's nuts. SO bizarre, be interesting if it makes it what kind of person it will be considering the mother was dead.

the mother wanted it this way, the husband and family too...there is literally no one but the state saying that the woman should be kept on life support. Not that the chinese aren't fucked up but they're right on one thing, americans pretty much throw away the elderly yet will go to untold measures to preserve the life of an infant. It's kind of fucked.

The kicker to me is there is a good chance the fetus was deprived of oxygen. So the state is forcing the husband to a) deal with the hospital bills (maybe they have awesome insurance and there's no copays but that's pretty rare) and b) potentially be saddled with a child that has severe disabilities. Wrong on so many levels. This is the shit that I've always worried about with pro lifers wanting to give fetuses rights, where does the line get drawn?

Fetus of Texas woman on life support 'distinctly abnormal,' family lawyers say - U.S. News

well this settles that debate. The fetus is so horribly disfigured it's gender cannot be determined. Plus potential heart problems etc, etc. This is pretty vile to keep this going. Fuck this world is not that great to justify bringing a child into it like this. Plus the lawyer is right...it would set a precedent where every woman that dies in a hospital anywhere would have to have a preggo test and if she was even 1 day pregnant would have to be strapped up to a machine for 9 months just to see what comes out. The word depravity doesn't even begin to touch that scenario.

If you were that poor little gender challenged embryo you wood have a different opinion

just sayin'

I'm sure they meant wasting away. Atrophy and all.

I don't think so. She's not in a vegetative state. She's dead. Her body is a corpse. They're not keeping her alive or anything, they're like...they're like trying to keep the fetus alive inside of a corpse, but she's dead. That's a body not like, not like someone in a coma. I'm curious how long a corpse that's still on machines or whatever can sit like that before starting to appear dead. We really have no clue how horrifying this is for the family...or isn't. how long can someone who is brain dead stay on a machine like that before like, the illusion of life is gone? How do they keep the body warm for the fetus?

nono, she has no brain activity but the body is still very much alive, there is blood pumping, oxygen circulating, because she's plugged up but the basic body functions remain. They describe her as dead because the minute they plug her off she's gone, but she's on life support, meaning the artificial respirators, feeding tubes, etc are keeping her alive. If she were literally dead then blood, nutrients, etc wouldn't flow through the umbilical cord and the baby would be dead already too.

Well, that's what I'm reading is that body is dead basically and the machines can only keep the body alive for a short while but the body basically isn't alive. So that's what Im asking.

The little girl who was brain dead over the holidays, her body wasn't able to even regulate its temperature to stay warm. (what happened with that?) and that blood flow will eventually stop

You can always tell when cindy is in teh fogs lolololololol

WTF loloolololo

I'm at work and I'm not teh fogs! LOL Im dead srs asking the difference. I've seen someone who is in a coma and vegetative state. The words described by this family are not the words you use to describe someone in those states.

well brain dead is the equivalent of actually dead, life support is really organ support, keeps oxygen flowing, heart pumping and organs from collapsing

I was wondering that too. I saw a piece on the news last night where they said they couldn't even move her body given it's condition so was difficult to get accurate tests on the fetus (whatever they were testing). Usually people in a coma are getting moved around, aren't they? to prevent bed sores etc?

i'd move you around...coma or not...jus' sayin'.

That's because I think its significantly different than someone in a vegetative state (which is definitely an instance I could see keeping someone on life support till term if pregnant)

The family won. A judge ruled that life support is to be removed at 5:00 on Monday:

Judge Tells Hospital To Take Pregnant Woman Off Life Support : The Two-Way : NPR

A North Texas judge has ordered a Fort Worth hospital to remove life support from a woman who is 22 weeks pregnant. Her family says Marlise Munoz, 33, is brain dead. She has reportedly not been awake since November, when she was discovered unconscious in her home. Doctors say she had suffered a pulmonary embolism.

Why 5 on Monday? That just leaves time for things to get fucked up.
Sorry, I misquoted. Not AT 5:00 on Monday BY 5:00 on Monday.

So if she's still on life support at 5:01 Monday the hospital is in contempt ... unless someone or an entity (the hospital admins, the state of Texas) files an appeal, I guess. I would also guess the judge set that deadline to allow reasonable time for an appeal to be filed :whatever:
