would you do 1-2 rep max outs to strength train?

I’m 35 years old and I’m looking to get stronger over the next year. I’m interested in doing some strength training. One of the things I’m want to aim for is doing 1 or 2 rep max outs. Is this a good strategy for gaining strength? Or should I stick to higher repetitions?
 
if you do that have a spotter. with no spotter you run the risk of something bad happening. you don't want that
 
i've done it like that before. a great way to get hurt as others have said. gotta be smart
 
for strength training i think the key is stick to the big lifts. those are what help people get the most out of their strength improvements
