last year I averaged between 15-20 hour overtime each pay period (2 weeks)

this year overtime hours are few and far between

the extra $$$ is sweet but if I have my preference I'd rather have my weekends clear ... what I really don't like is management's feeling that overtime is "mission driven" and they can call you when they want

homie don't play that ... I'm compensated fairly, but not enough to be on 24/7 retainer

wanna talk about a scam on my days off i'm on a two hour
call back. not compensated at all for this.
ship sails and i'm not there i'm stuck holding my cack.
and when we go out on assignments we got spiked in the woods
eating MREs not getting paid for our down time. the sucky thing
about this is, although we are off the clock, we can't leave our spike camp, we have zero conviences, and we are sleeping on the dirt like dogs.
24 hr pay on assignment is in the works

that sounds fugged up

for many years I worked on the road stuck in shithole hotels primarily because that's what was available in rural areas I worked in ... mgmt thought they were doing something for you by paying TDY costs. they never factored in the fact that your life was stripped from you bunked up in dip shit towns that didn't even have a fugging Walmart

glad those days are behind me :)

my bro that is a fed fireman racks up on the OT

everytime someone "calls in" he jumps on the shift for a sweet 24 hour OT hit

They need to put you on salary so your weekends are just thrown-in for free!

My husband has to work every 5th Saturday, no opting out (and he's hourly). What they do is require you to take a day off the week leading up to it so it's not overtime, talk about screwed weekends.

What's really fucked is he's on-call the Sunday. He's limited to what he can do because he has to stay in cell range and within distance of any of his facilities and hates starting anything that might get interrupted. He gets no compensation for it. He gets paid if he gets called in, but if he does get called in it's probably something really bad so all in all he's just totally stressed the on-call days.

i often log into my work computer on sunday nights or weekday evenings. I'm not asked to, and I don't get overtime pay, but I have a lot of responsibility. my manager knows he can count on me, and that's invaluable.

Obviously the job market sucks, and I live in a rural community where jobs are scarce. I already have a long commute- if i were to lose this job, i'd have a hard time finding another one. Going way above what's asked of me not only bought me job security, but it just got me a $7,500 a year raise.

I'm on the same page - I am salary and work when I need to get things done, and to get a jump on things. I am all about keeping my job. I don't get overtime pay but do get random project related bonuses - just received $1000 after taxes for holding together my golf outing and helping with our annual leadership conference, got a couple grand when I wrapped up my press releases for 2009, another grand when I did our pricing guides when the vp of marketing was out... i figure, they treat me well, - so I'm going to continue working my ass off.

I'm Prussian....I only know work. I haven't taken a vacation since I was forced by the ex-wife in 2000. :)
 
a big part of me wants to say "be grateful you get paid for it" cause I don't (salaried). not really that familiar with "days off", as it is. can't remember the last time I had 2 days in a row that didn't involve working, thought not all those days are 8-10 hours either.

i have a lot of friends who are cops, for example, and a big part of me is jealous of their work schedule (talking about schedule here, not actual job). they get to pretty much leave their job responsibilities at the station when their shift ends and also get to pick and choose when to make a bunch of extra money via details. compare that with schmucks like me who worked yesterday from 6am to 10pm, then now up at 5:30 am to do it all over again, yet make no extra dough for any of it.

makes me wonder...

That's one of the reasons my husband has resisted moving into a salaried position. They own your ass.

I confess I fantasize about having a job that you go in, do your time, clock out and you're done. No mental aggrivation, no stress. Just simple, do this, do that, see ya tomorrow.

Wish to god I could immigrate to France and go work for McDonald's. They get 5 weeks paid, y'know.

It's a double-edged sword. Longer hours can easily lead to lower quality of life. But higher productivity is also key to higher quality of life. So working harder may lower one person's quality of life, but increase the quality of life of many others. So if everyone works hard enough, it actually keeps the pie growing. Adam Smith was a genius. He figured this stuff out before the revolutionary war.

Now an even better answer would be increased productivity via ways other than sheer harder work (i.e. computers, telecommunications, automobiles), but those ideas don't always drop in our laps in a timely manner.

it's about 12:40 am e-s-t and i'm still working...and i gotta get back up at 6 am...why am i still working?? because i have work to do and because i have stuff that needs paid for...but, probably more importantly because that's the way i was raised...you got work to do, you do it...sometimes, when i have time, i sit around and think about ways to work smarter, so that i can have more balance in my life...but, most of the time i'm too dang busy for that kind of idle thought...i have a wife, three kids, a house, three cars and all sorts of other things that have their hooks in my pocket...so most of the time, mine is not to question why, mine is but to do and die :whatever:

I've read your posts before bro about your life, you are an animal. I don't know how you balance a family life with that schedule. But it sort of bolsters my point that guys like you break their backs and basically get handed a pitance compared to the people that write your paychecks. Austrian econ. is a pryamid scheme. It says' digi, one day you'll have people working for you and you can live the high life while other people break their backs to get where you are. There's a serious fundamental flaw with that paradigm that's probably better left for another discussion.
