Why is it prejudice when a stereotype is negative...

but a compliment when its a positive stereotype? For instance, the opinion is pretty widely held that african americans are on average more violent, less educated, and less wealthy. But saying so would be racist, prejudice and inaccurate. But, when we comment on how the Japanese are so smart, that gays dress nicely, and that latin women have the finest asses, everyone laughs and giggles and has a good time. How many times have you heard, "Oh yeah, well I know a lot of black people that don't kill and steal, so you're wrong"? as opposed to "Oh yeah, well I know these gay guys who dress like complete slobs, and I know these really dumb Japanese people, so you need to shut your face"?

Is it just an innate human reaction to accept positive comments although they may be just an inaccurate as the negative ones? Or do we frown upon the negative stereotypes because society, or the minorities that they single out are afraid that there may be some truth in them?

The only truth that we minorities "fear " would be that too many people judge all of us by what a few have done. If a woman had been mugged and now at her job I am in the elevator with her and she moves her purse to the side away from me how am I too feel? I did nothing to her and I am saddened that she was assaulted but I did not do it and she does not know me from adam. Grouping all whites as RACIST,REDNECK MOTHERFU#$#RS WOULD BE JUST AS WRONG! I do not blame any white person for slavery and many of them never had relatives who owned slaves. The generalizations are a result of people not spending any time with the other group.Look at the DOMINICANS AND THE HAITIANS they all live on the same island and though it is divided they have relatives on both sides yet in MIAMI they riot and fight in school and have nothing good to say about the other group.Ask one of them if they have relatives on the other side and they will deny it for a year of sudays. I will never call a person a racist but if you make a statement that is very general about someone or group then you should be ready to defend and back up what you said with some sort of logical explanation or you will come out looking like an asshole and having some sort of hangup.Do not stereotype me and all will be fine because I am one individual who wants to remain that way regardless of my skin color.
