Why is eating right so expensive?

fiction agent

New member
It seems like the only thing that's fairly cheap is peanut butter and brown rice.

Chicken, tuna, and meat in general is very expensive.

Almonds and cashews are really expensive.

Fruits, especiall berries, are expensive with fewer calories.

Vegtables are cheap, but you need to eat so many different kinds that it winds up being expensive.

Olive oil is expensive. (Canola isn't, but it's not as healthy.)

Protein shakes are damn expensive.

I'd really like to know how a poor person could even remotely eat healthy. Seems like fastfood is 1/4 the price. And yet the rich people are the fat ones...

What the hell do people spend their money on? Hot pockets?

Actually the poor people are the fat ones because they eat so much fast food and don't have time to go to the gym. What world are you living in? Obesity is far more of an epidemic in lower income areas where the school lunches are less healthy, the nutritional education is of a lower quality, and also there is less physical space to play in.. so children are more likely to spend time indoors. And generally, parents who work long hours are less likely to cook and more likely to bring home fast food/to go food for their children.

And while healthy food can be pricey.. I GUARANTEE YOU that desserts and junkfood are much more costly than healthy food. The thing about a healthy diet is that most of those foods also appear in unhealthy diets.... (for example both diets include chicken, one is grilled, one is deep dried). Which would cost more to prepare at home? The latter. Why? More ingredients and also possibly the purchase of a deep fryer. etc.

Dude I hear ya. I spent over $200 of healthy food and it only lasted about 3 weeks and when I buy like tv dinners and pizza it last much longer.
Everyone is saying that America is so fat but the healthy food is soo expensive maby they should lower the prices of healthy food if its such a problem......

Well, for anyone who wants to have some flavor in their food its definitely more expensive.

When I was fat, I used to drink every weekend and eat 4x the amount of food I eat now and would survive off $150 a week. Now I spend more than $200 a week and find myself running out of money by the end of the month.

Do you have any idea how much sodium you are ingesting on a daily basis with that diet? Canned tuna has a very high amount of sodium in it. There have also been many studies about mercury levels in the blood when eating more than 3 cans of tuna in a week. You're not necessarily eating "healthy" persay. Add up how many milligrams in 6 cans of tuna a day (ridiculous) and you'd be shocked. Get a Forman grill and buy some chicken.

Just my opinion.

1. Since most Americans still opt for the "unhealthy" foods these products are more likely to be produced en masse and come out to a cheaper price.

2. Most of these foods are loaded with all sorts of chemicals and flavor additives to the point where the quality of the meat isnt that important, and it comes out to a cheaper price.

3. Organically grown food is a much more expensive process, and organic farms are usually smaller than commercial farms.

I think it all comes down to relying on a few good staples, brown rice, cottage cheese, someone said tuna. Knowing how to properly marinate chicken. In the end I think eating healthy can cost the same or less than eating whatever you want, but it does take a certain amount of work in finding healthy cheap foods and preparing your own meals.

But it is ridiculous how an organic turkey sandwhich fresh cut at my school costs 8 bucks compared to the taco bell 4 bucks for a grilled stuft chicken burrito.

I have a question.. what should I eat to lose any fat on my stomach in combination with cardio in the morning? Please specify maybe a list of healthy items that I can eat almost everyday throughout my routine. :p

Tips for cheap diet:

(1) oatbran instead of oat meal, as higher in protein by 70%
(2) Skim milk powder instead of skim milk (4 times cheaper)
(3) And of course tuna (by the way I have 4 tins a day, and my mercury levels were recently tested and far below toxicity levels.

I live in Australia, and we also have access to Kangaroo meat, which has a similar nutritional profil to beef in terms of nutritents but is less than 2% fat, and less than .4% saturated fat. ALmost as good as tuna!

dude send me some of that kangaroo!!!

I too was thinking of the cost of eating healthy, or a bodybuilders diet, and concluded that it's totally worth it. Junk food makes you feel like shit. What your getting is totally natural, the way it's meant to be, even if you pay out your arse for it. Junk food has tonnes of additives, chemicals, that just wern't meant to be, thus filling out food, giving it a longer shelf life etc. If you think about it, thousands of years ago our job was to survive, by eating, and catching our own food (getting fit) Personally, If I can work, and not have to go out and catch chickens, pick fruit and veg, catch fish, milk a cow, then I'm pretty happy to be spending a good percentage of my wage for it to be natural!!! People were just born spoilt with $1 burgers at mcdonalds lol.

It's true in relation to carbohydrate sources that the bodybuilder's diet is totally natural, (i.e., un processed unrefined carbohydrates) and therefore resembles our ancient ancestors, but I think the hunter gathers many years ago would have consumed far more saturated fat - i.e., if they killed an animinal, it can be doubted they would trip of the white fat parts

It's true, but it's true also that our ancestors didn't care about their bf. :)

they didn't need to care, trying to catch an animal would use up all that fat, probably why people think fat is so tasty, because it's in our genetics as a high energy source.

Hello, the answer is that in this capitalist system which is a profit-based system, the Multinational Corporations of the food-sector rip higher profits in fattening, and starchy carbohydrate foods like Pancakes, White Breads, Duncan Himes Cakes, Sara Lee Cakes, Apple Pies, than in healthy foods like pineapples, apples, brocolli, carrots, etc.

You have to realize that healthy food is not addicting, which is why people do not binge on apples or on brocoli, but corporate fattening foods like cakes, chocolates, Mcdonalds, Doritos, have addicting components, which is even better for corporations, as opposed to healthy foods that are not addicting

I mean it is cheaper for corporations to make pancakes, breads and cookies than it is to make brocoli which requires a real slower process

I have found that the key to cheap and healthy eating is to plan your meals and a membership at a discount club. I buy 2 weeks worth at each visit. A typical list will include:

1 bag frozen tuna steaks or salmon fillets
1 top or bottom steak (cut into serving sizes when I get home)
16 cans of tuna
1 bag of frozen chicken breasts
1 large bag of mixed nuts (all nuts are a good not just almonds)
2.5 dozen eggs
frozen veggies (cheaper, quicker, and just as healthy)

Every few days on the way home from work I buy in season fresh fruit (in season fruit is cheaper). I try to eat all protein from whole food sources and have recently quit eating dairy products. With a little creativity you will never get bored with the above list.
