The only people I know who have a happy marrige are my grandparents. All my friends and relatives who got hitched are totally miserable for the most part. My mom is with a great guy now, but damn....it took her 55 years and 2 bad marriges to find him. My younger step-sister got engaged a while back, and the date is set for next summer. I hope to God it works out for her, but I can't help being cynical.
What always amazes me is how one person in a marrige will allways alter themselves to please their partner. I see it in my male friends who have been essentially castraded by thier wives. I see it my female friends, smart women whom I admire, who always bow down to thier husbands wishes. I saw it with both my parents when they remarried (again and again, lol). I don't understand that overwhelming need to be with someone, no matter what.
I've never been in love but I've been close. Even so, I'll be damned if I'm gonna change who I am just stay married to someone. No way.
Now, dispite all this, I really do think I'll get married at some point. Maybe not in the tradional sense -- in a church with a reception, etc. But I can see myslef committing to and growing old with a woman I'm in love with.
And I'd fuck the shit out her everynight. Even when we're in our 80's.
Bet you guys thought I was getting soft for a minute there, eh?
