Who goes to a chiropractor?

It was one of the most painful things I've been through, but I did come out of it OK. Good luck.
That is good to know I thought I was being a wimp but seriously pain is awful and constant.

I had a back injury that was caused by stupidity. We have a horrible bumbell rack in our gym (bottom row directly under top) I injured my L4 vert. After 3 weeks of pain I finally went for the 1st time ever. After 3 weeks all was better. I honestly can say that problems would have continued had I not gone. About 4 weeks ago I suffered another injury that was also taken care of very quickly.

I want to reply to so many posts here... Well, we go to dentists regularly and MD's regularly, why not go to Chiros regularly.

I was always in the camp of "Chiros are quacks" until I went to one for my back. I was EXTREME agony when I walked into his office with my neck literally on a 45 degree angle to the floor. When he adjusted me I was pain free and never looked back. He DID say I needed additional adjustments becuase it's just like any other medical field... you NEED to keep up with things... You need to do preventative steps for anything regarding your body and health. In the begining I was going 2 or 3 times a week because it was bad. Then once a week... nowe once a month or every few months. My spine is in pretty good shape compared to how it was before going.

I wholeheartedly support capable chiropractors.

When I walked in the office the first time, he felt my back and pinpointed to exact area of my pain without me telling him a word. I should have went to a hiro years before. I lived with unneaded pain for years because I too thought they were quacks. I just went to one because i was so "desperate" at the time, but it worked out great. Do it!!!

I don't know about you but I do not make weekly or even monthly visits to any doctor or dentist to fix the same thing over and over and over.

Its not the same thing over and over again. Its just an adjustment of the spine. It could be in your lower back one month and your neck the next month. These pains normaly come from things like how you slept on you pillow or from sitting too long in the office chair.

Qt, I had to go when I was pl'ing.. One training session loaded the bar with 300 only half suited, wraps and a belt.. went down and on the way up my entire right side went numb.

Stayed like that for three weeks, so I went in and went thru all the bullshit first, Xrays.. blah blah. Finally he started the therapy, i'd go in twice a week and get adjustments in my neck back and hips. The heavy lifting had also did something to my hips but after they were adjusted it felt so damn good. No pain. It took several adjustments for me to get the feeling back though.

There is no simple way to explain this, you either understand it, or are at least willing to TRY to understand it or not.

Our spine, from the very top vertebra that support the skull, all the way down to the coccyx, is dynamic. It is not a rigid structure, like a leg bone. And not only is it moving, it's a support structure. You handle a weight, even the weight of hoisting a gallon of milk, in one way or another your spine is hoisting that weight.

Some of us were born with genetic/congenital conditions that make us predisposed to imbalance in the spine, and what happens when you have an imbalance on any weight bearing structure? Collapse. Same basic theory. I can only use myself as an example, I was born with a couple of congenital anomolies that make me particularly susceptible to imbalances. In addition, I am developing degenerative disc disease, which my older brother also has. My father suffered horrendous back trouble all of his life, my mother had neck pain and headaches all of hers ... I seem to have inherited BOTH of their conditions, and added a few interesting twists of my own.

I work for neurologists/neurosurgeons and orthopedists. One thing I know, operations for most chronic/degenerative conditions of the spine (as opposed to traumatic injury of the spine, I really want to make that clear) are almost a guarantee that you're going to be going under the knife for back surgery for the rest of your life. And you're probably going to be in pain and getting some sort of pain treatment until the day you die. Far better to find a way to maintain function and comfort without surgery or other intervention. For me that means regular weight training and seeing my chiropractor every three weeks. If I stop doing either or those I start to deteriorate within a month to six weeks.

it may be something as simple as a pinched nerve... but don't ignore it. Go get it checked out before it gets worse.

I think it is Sciatica I been reading up and the symptoms for that a pretty much what I am feeling. :S
Sciatic pain would run almost perfectly from just about or below center of the glute to the heel of that leg. It is generally a burning pain, and can have an "electric" quality. It feels like the back of your entire leg has a rotten toothache.

There are charts that actually map which part of the body is innervated according to where the nerve exits the spine:

http://www.vcu.edu/mcved/pictures/dermatome1.jpg

This explains why someone who has carpal tunnel syndrome will have problems in just certain fingers and not others, things like that. If you look at that chart you'll see that our fingers are innervated by the nerves C8 and C7, our thumb by C6.

Nerve pain MUST follow a certain path, by it's very nature, and a nerve cannot hurt in one place and not everywhere, although it can hurt differently in different areas.

I just hope you feel better ASAP, SuperQ!!

We have a MD/Chiro office here. Thier schtick is they can see you today, refer you if necessary instead of waiting a couple days for your family practitioner to see you.

I've heard some good things about them, though. I'll hold off judgement.
