WHO do you think should be TIME'S MAN OF THE YEAR.

RyanH said:

or Reagan for lying about Iran Contra or for Nixon for proving to be the biggest scoundrel to ever step foot in the White House or Bush Sr for lying as well.

And Clinton, and Kennedy, and LBJ - look into his past for a great story of corrupted politics.

He inspires everyone with his rousing rhetoric, doesn't he? He has zero speaking skills; if he was wise he wouldn't have put John Ashcroft in as attorney general; if he was a good manager he'd been able to win an election; if he exhibited character he wouldn't have a DUI and then lied about it, or had a coke habit and lied about.

But so is getting defeated in the second term of a presidency.

Ryanh, if little else, I would have thought you could pay attention to current events. I guess you missed Bush's speech in front of Congress rallying the country after Sep 11th that was praised by republicans, democrats, Americans and the media. I guess you didn't catch his speech at Fort Campbell Kentucky earlier this week and I suppose you only noticed your Communist Putin speaking during the press conference in Crawford?

Continue to ignore the facts and maybe you won't feel so bad when Bush wins his 2d term hands down and then turns it over to another republican in 08.

sounds like a good choice, why not Ben Laden he gave America a good reason to kick his ass ?

No seriously it should be George W. Bush. Tell me what Rudy has done so important. Bush had more power, could take the real decision. Rudy is only a mayor......

i dont think bush should get it. He's fulfilled his function as a president well, but his high approval rating would be mirrored if gore was president and took military action

even now he's talking about taking out al-queada and then just leaving the country in turmoil. and he's getting dangerously chummy with pakistan again, especially over kashmir. previous to the tradgedy of sep-11 he had refused to go into the world racism talks, the bio-warfare thing....

guiliani has so much respect from probably everyone. i dont know, he has cancer? still to get out there and do what he did, to be a figurehead internationally, lots of respect. pus i heard he made NYC safer to live in to, helped improve your underground rail network and did zero tolerance shit on crime. only possible hiccup is the refusal of the audi's millions because he said the US needs to review foreign policy

has anyone forgotten putins actions over the kursk sinking and the whole war in chechnya-- universally condemed by the west before sep-11, now freely accepted as one of russia conditions for help and use of bases. he's got a lot to do IMHO before he's worthy of that title, but i hiope he achieves it. hes already put forward a nuclear disarmament program

id think about putting foward the pope, he's done a lot of good things relating to other religions and branches of his own. no-one else springs to mind but im sure there are more good choices

GOOD POINT! Bush's not sending a U.S. representative to the U.N. Conference on Racism as well as rejecting Kyoto have embarrased the United States to the rest of the world.

The only reason Bush's speech to Congress was praised is because the bar is so low for Bush that when he gets though one speech without fucking up, his supporters say, "Oh Bush just gave an incredible speech." When in actuality his speech sucked as usual, he just made it through it without bad grammar or stumbling on his words.

I also believe that the tension between India & Pakistan will continue to increase & that trouble in the middle east will not end in Afghanistan. Kashmir has led India & Pakistan to be as strong of enemies as the Israel's & Palestenians are to each other. Bush is walking a tight-rope with those two countries....by kissing up to Pakistan, he's alienating India.

A good choice, I agree. Although he doesn't have the international presence, while he has certainly influenced New York, has he influence the world?

good point. But the Russian economy is flourishing for the first time in decades and his disarmament program greatly gives security to the rest of the world. Getting the Russian economy going again is no small accomplishment, and Putin has done just that. When Putin took office, we assumed that we would be in for another cold war with the Russians, but he's proved us all wrong. His merits simply cannot be overlooked.

I still say Putin for man of the year, unless someone has other good choices. Maybe there's some scientist we haven't thought of.

yeah

putins the best leader they have had for a while, from their perspective since kruschev (sp?).....every other one has been an idiot

i do like his disarmament pogram, but instead of being able to destroy the world X5 over, we can now destroy it X2 :D, and he's certainly more open to world opinion than any toher leader....we will see how good a friend he is when the russians start shipping out their oil and competing with OPEC. still he's very shady

there have been tons of discoveries as usual, new types of drugs andall that but nothing really comes to mind, so i cant think of a scientist.

as for the afghan situatio there is a conflict of thought from either side of the atlantic on what to do. i am also terrifiesd of what is gonna happen with pakistan. right now, the pakistani militray is replacing civillian government officials with their own men, which means when the country stops being a dictatorship and is let back into the commonwealth etc, the military will still be pulling the strings. and i really hope when powell said he was help pakistan resolve kashmir he meant diplomatically

The critieria for "Man of the Year" do not include making a positive contribution to the world's situation. The cover recognizes the single personality that has had the most influence on us in the last year. Many scoundrels, including Hitler, have had the cover. That, of course, means the appropriate choice would be Osama. (OUt of curiosity, does anyone remember who was Man of the Year the year of the Gulf War?)

However, I doubt Time will give Osama the cover just because it will enrage so many people who continue to think it's supposed to be a "positive" award. (And I feel that strong sentiment in myself.) I'm guessing, like Smalls, it will be some composite figure representing the rescue workers or Rudy G. I think, in this economy, with everyone shamelessly exploiting the wave of patriotism in their marketing, Time will not follow its own criteria.

As for Dubya and friends' performance, I find it horrifying. Ashcroft has gutted the Freedom of Information Act and Forrrest W. Gump has removed PResidential papers from public domain. Even grand jury investigations have lost their historic secrecy. IN a few years, we're all going to wake up and find ourselves going through the 60s again, having to undo the effects of curtailed civil liberties.

I'm glad Strongchick showed back up. It's always been my position we should give ourselves vacations when an internet chat board or list becomes unbearable...but never say never. I hope Bukky comes back, too, and I'm happy to see Smalls back.

It has not only been his supporters, but democratic leaders and the media as well. Only stubborn liberals like yourself refuse to acknowledge his skills, but that is understandable.
