The critieria for "Man of the Year" do not include making a positive contribution to the world's situation. The cover recognizes the single personality that has had the most influence on us in the last year. Many scoundrels, including Hitler, have had the cover. That, of course, means the appropriate choice would be Osama. (OUt of curiosity, does anyone remember who was Man of the Year the year of the Gulf War?)
However, I doubt Time will give Osama the cover just because it will enrage so many people who continue to think it's supposed to be a "positive" award. (And I feel that strong sentiment in myself.) I'm guessing, like Smalls, it will be some composite figure representing the rescue workers or Rudy G. I think, in this economy, with everyone shamelessly exploiting the wave of patriotism in their marketing, Time will not follow its own criteria.
As for Dubya and friends' performance, I find it horrifying. Ashcroft has gutted the Freedom of Information Act and Forrrest W. Gump has removed PResidential papers from public domain. Even grand jury investigations have lost their historic secrecy. IN a few years, we're all going to wake up and find ourselves going through the 60s again, having to undo the effects of curtailed civil liberties.
I'm glad Strongchick showed back up. It's always been my position we should give ourselves vacations when an internet chat board or list becomes unbearable...but never say never. I hope Bukky comes back, too, and I'm happy to see Smalls back.
