I'll bet that guy is fantastically popular on campus.
On my college campus there was an all black group that got funding from the student council to meet up and hang out. They also got their own building.
There was also an all Asian group that got the same deal, funding and their own house.
Sure enough, those of various descents got the same deal.
Except whites.
I always found that amusing.
That said - if I had really wanted to, I could have joined the all black club and they likely would have let me in - but they would have made it really uncomfortable for me.
We strive so hard to integrate, and things like this happen where the groups try to recreate the separation all over again.
Had I, or anyone else (and people did this), tried to get funding for an all white group and house, then there would be a huge uproar on campus.
And this was a very white campus.
Pretty much the only group that didn't have a house and funding were just regular white males. If they were gay, bi, trans, etc, then they had their club and funding.
I personally think it is all bullshit and should be based on merit. I would say need as well, but "need" is a very relative thing.
One of my good friends in school couldn't get need based scholarships because her family was just on the edge of the line. My family could get them, but not hers - and she had brothers and sisters, whereas I was an only child.
Oh well, human nature won't sit idle. Make one choice, people will complain. Make another one, people still complain.
