I understand the south's output was mainly limted to agriculture, and the north was industrial. plus the main cities of the north were more densly populated. but comparing output is like comparing apples to oranges IMO.

Slave states being less productive fits this model...the only answer was "get more slaves" as opposed to "improve the process".
