Not the best in the world by any stretch of the imagination, but it's always a treat just the same. Whataburger reminds me of the burgers they used to have at every Mom 'n Pop Dairy Freeze along the old 2-way highway system when I was a kid. Cross-country travel was a lot different back then, and those roadside attractions were a big part of it. Those places always had krinkle-kut fries too.
the best imo for fast food.
and yeah freeway's killed the type of travel you describe, and all the neat little attractions along the way.
the upper part of michigan, though, doesn't have any freeways and there is still a lot of what you describe
