What format and WHY ?

I've found 192 Kbps for my WMA rips is a good compromise to get
best quaility near CD and still keep the size in the 4-5 Meg range...

Post up, or I'll move this to Style, Fashion and Grooming ..

I do 192 Kbps in Mp3. It's probably my hearing, but i can't tell much of a diff between 192 and 320.

4 outa 5 experts agree that anything over 192 is indiscernable(sp?)
to the human hearing. As being better that is.

192. 320 is only worth it if you have an amazing stereo system to justify wasting that much HD space.

Used to do 128, mostly because the lame programs are like "128 - cd quality!!11" yeah, um, no.

128 is crap. At least 192, but with my new headphones I can tell the diff btw 192 and 320... 320 just sounds fuller and crisper.

well I record at 192 khz @64 bit when I record on my comp... which is essentially beyond dvd audio quality... but by the time I'm done dropping it even to cd quality (44,100 @ 16 bit) I notice a SIGNIFICANT difference. Further compressing the file to mp3 format yeilds an even more intense difference... but to answer your question, I use vbr when I rip.

192 to rip, if I'm downloading I'll always take both the higher and low bit rates and store the better of the two.

The difference isn't noticable on most tracks but if the track has been produced well then i find that it's not only louder, the sound is much clearer and solid.

I much prefer the dynamics of a studio recording than any live recording although high fidelity wise the best track I currently have is a live acoustic version of Coldplay's Shiver (awesome soundstage).
