Vista advice -- 512 RAM enough?

Radical Ice

Puter died last week, spent the weekend looking for something else. Overwhelmed by the technology after 4 years of not even thinking about a new computer....
Anyway, had XP, but I see that everything is Vista now. And 1 gig ram or less seems typical at the local retail outlets.
Reading some articles on Vista, looks like you need at least 2 gig RAM for Vista to run smoothly... Is that true?

If so, why do so many computers come new-in-box with 1 gig or less?

Gotta go straight to the upgrade desk for more memory?
Not a gamer, just a surfer, but I occasionally edit camcorder stuff...
Thanks!

hell no dude for a good experinice get 2 gigs at least 1 bare monium

Agree doubly, I bought a 1 gig and had to return it cause Vista froze or ran like molasses. Either keep XP or get 2 gig or your hatin life. I got a 2 gig and smooth sailing.

don't get vista.. i have it and it sucks more cock than jh1

it's enough to hit the power button...thats about it.

You going for a desktop computer?

Go for a Core 2 Duo - anything AMD is offering cant even touch it.
Any new computer is going to have Vista offered, and I agree 100% that its crap. But its what you're faced with short of buying a copy of XP (or learning enough about other methods of obtaining a copy), and then finding all the drivers etc...

Memory is cheap anymore, 2 gigs for 49.99 shipped:

2 gigs minimum, unless all you plan on running besides the OS is one program at a time. I'd stick with XP like Velvett says until Vista A. is cheaper, and B. runs better.

UAIron knows what he's talking about too with that newegg link. Buy an out of the box PC from there or build your own and keep you copy of XP to install on your new PC for the time being. Micro$oft'$ quality has sucked cock since XP and the original Xbox. Hold off on Vista until they start giving a damn again about what they release to the consumer.
