I take a prescription drug just before bed, it helps me sleep, is a pain aid, and is necessary as I have Chronic Pain. On top of that, I take Tryptophan,1.5 gram, which is 3 pills, and it's over the counter (Amazon); plus I take Melatonin 10 mg, and will up it to 15 on days I need to get more sleep. Except for the prescription drug I have to take, Tryptophan and Melatonin are safe (use as directed), and I've been taking these for years and sure sometimes I woke up a little groggy when I used extra Melatonin, but after a few minutes, I'm good to go and rested! Both of these OTC supplements are supposed to have other beneficial benefits than just as sleep aids.
