Paint thinner comes in different forms ie:naptha,mineral spirits,xylene and mixture of all some of which will leave residuals.
Drain cleaners are usually lye or hydrochloric acid both of which can make a reaction go totally in another direction. Griniard reaction??

You mean Grignard? No way.

Concnetrated H2SO4 is available at the hardware store as an industrial strength drain cleaner...

well solvents are pretty easy to get, but what about esters?

another concern i have is there a way to make sure the procedure went good and the product is obtained in good yeild, almost every time you run a reaction you end up with multiple reactions unless the conditions are precisely twicked for a specific reaction.

Just didn't want you to hurt anyone with information that is tested.You have done this at home haven't you and sorry for my spelling(Grignard).I took many chem courses in college but that was long ago as I am 44,old and feebble,don't remember much and can't lift anything over 10lbs.
