Tough love

What was the biggest time in your lives you have ever demonstrated tough love to a loved one? I have never had kids but when I was little I stole gum and my Mom caught me and made me bring it back to the counter and explain myself. Then she took me to the police department and turned me in. I was very scared!

I have been traumatized ever since!!

Every girl I have ever dated. They all hated me at the time for it.....then months, sometimes years later I get emails, phone calls, text messages thanking me in tears for it. It's not easy to do things that people don't udnerstand or that won't have immediate benefits, but it's necessary for you to see the long term results.

Wow man, that is rough.

Mine is 14 so I am sure my tough times are yet to come. Really the worst for me is putting him on lock down for grades right now. No tv, computer, skateboard, phone, playstation..NOTHING! I used to try and take his favorite toy but that never made an impact. This is!!! I hate punishing him because I love doing things with him and I almost feel like I am just as punished when he is. It breaks my heart but he will even admit that he did it to himself. On the good note, everything else has improve while on lockdown...manners, chores etc.

oh and I bet you never stole a thing after that. I have a huge problem with lying. I don't expect no one here to believe me since lies run in abundance but I am horrible about it. I got caught so many times growing up and my parents always knew when I was lying and I just got in more trouble. So now I teach my son the same thing, if your gonna do something and you know there is a chance you can be caught then be willing to fess up to it. Plain and simple. Like last night for example I knew he tried to use the phone but denied it AT FIRST but did come clean when I told him there would be bigger consequences. So he fessed up and I fussed at him for just a minute and it was over. I had to prove to him that being honest is the best policy.

My sisters and I *borrowed* some ears of corn, from a neighbor's garden, to present as a birthday gift to our mother. She also was very wise and made us work off the cost of the corn, then we had to swallow our pride, return to the scene of the crime and present payment to the neighbor. She never turned us in to the police, though:D

I gotta do it with my kids everyday. . .they're six yo (twins) and they are always trying to get over on the system. . .it's tough but, I'm their parent, not their friend.

I honestly think that if more parents took this approach, there wouldn't be shows like jerry springer and ricky lake.

We are raising a nation of irresponsible cry babies and I really do believe it all goes back to the lack of discipline and especially repurcutions (SP?)

I have a friend who thinks he is punishing his 11 year old daughter by taking away her cell phone. Nevermind the cable modem connected laptop computer she has in her room, or the plasma tv or the stereo or the lock on her bedroom door, etc, etc. Whats an 11 year old need a cell phone for anyways; who does she gotta call? "and then I was like, and billy was like so no way, and he was like, and I was like...." 1300 minutes later.
