To all those who have dislocated a shoulder....

To all those who have dislocated a shoulder during any activity, I am interested to know if you have re-dislocated while working out. If so, what exercise were you doing when it popped out?
I suffered my first dislocation recently and would like to know what exercises I should avoid.

FUCK YES

I re-dislocated it during dumbbell military presses. I was doing 85's and one of them tilted back behind my head a little bit and it ripped out all the way to the floor... you could hear it in the weight room going *KKKEEEERRRRRRRRR*, I threw it back in myself (just did what the doc did in the hospital the first time around).

Since then, my military dumbbell press is limited to around 60-65lbs, I can't do military bar press, I can't do incline bar (unless a spotter) and my max bench press is limited to around 250lbs, and after I do my set, my arm feels like it is going to fall out and my workout is done.... needless to say, I don't bench much.

My advice, be VERY careful. Limit your motions so as not to jepordize your shoulder. I don't even touch my dumbbell flat bench presses or incline presses together anymore, for fear that the instability in my shoulder will cause further injury.

Any questions, e-mail me... I'm a guru on shoulder injuries and how to work them.

i was kicking this old friends ass and some how i threw my left sholder out, no lifting for months accept for legs and abs. i gradually started pressing 10lb dumbells and gradually worked my way up to the 80lbers. im still very subpar of my previous work out with the 105lb bumbells but im working my way back. no over head presses any more and i can lay on my back on the ground and rotate my hand and elbow in ways that cause my shoulder to make poping noises and things in my soulder move around. i am getting very srtong delts and back but my bench is deffinatly suffering still. with the help of this next cycle i think it may hepl my recovery. it was almost a year aog this happened. any suggestions? i did cycle after this happened and it did help and im looking forward to this one. btw: i dont have any pain when working out or at all for that matter but i do feel limited.

thanks for the replies. So it sounds like military presses are out. I'm guessing that flies will be no good also, along with pec dec (once the arm starts going behind the body). Anyone had problems with squats? Is dumbell or barbell bench more comfortable?
Thanks in advance for replies.

dislocated mine last night at the gym, wow my first injury, SUX

i was lay'n down on a flat bench doing tricep movements with a 70 lb dumbell, you press straight out then go behind the head, well i went to back far behind my head i guess , my right shoulder popped out of socket for about 5-10 secs, i picked my right arm upw ith my left and it popped back in, its pretty sore day after, hope it heals ok, and dosent mess up my training

word of advice from someone who has just had surgery to remedy this problem about four months ago. If you dislocate it only when it is in a certain orientation, limit the movements so that you don't put it in that orientation. I have dislocated mine several times. Only movement that messes with it is when I do squats and extend my arms withthe weight on it...it will dislocate for sure. Other than that, do rotator cuff exercises always and always warm um with them prior to doing shoulders or chest. Keep it light on the joint for at least two weeks. Also, once i tpops once, the likelihood is much greater it will happen again and the joint is now much weaker than before!

i popped it out blocking someone in basketball

i didn't lift of play for close to 3 months, did lots of rehab with the rubber band and stabilization movements --- i feel these are very important

i still get a little clicking noise when i do anykind of incline press, im limited to using the machine for overhead presses and the weight is limited as well ... i find that after being careful for close to 10months the biggest thing is that it gets sore after use (still) and my range of movement is very limited (and im guessing will always be)

I was doing fucking millitarypresses over the summer and almost poped my shoulder out again. so i would say stay away from them bet then again I would like to know where the tear in the cartilage is around your shoulder? depending on the location millitary presses and other movements may not effect you as much as others.

Also for those that have had the surgery how much if an did it effect your range of motion, and/or lifting ability

I don't think mine is dislocated but it sure as hell fuckin hurts when I do flat bench barbell. I get up and it feels like it's out of socket. Military presses and incline is ok though - go figure.
