At work, this guy comes into register for the school. He has a little 4 year old girl with him. While he is inside, his car starts on fire in the parking lot. Went up in flames. We had to call the fire dept. I could smell the alcohol on the guy's breath as I took him and his little girl to his car. He broke down and wept. He only had liability insurance and he would have no way to get to school or work now. I felt his pain and saw the hurt. I offered to help him by giving him a ride to the school until he gets a car. I find out that he went to the same highschool as I did and we know many of the same people.
The next day, many of the faculty on their smoke break were talking about what a jerk the guy was and that they were happy that his car caught on fire so they wouldn't have to deal with him. He had even supposedly threatened to kick the director's ass. Oh boy what a dilemna. I had already told him that I would help him and he broke down and wept on the phone when I confirmed to him that I was gonna give him a ride to school. He said, "Why would you do that for me?" I told him why. I considered buying a cheap car for him because I was afraid I would lose my job once they found out that I was giving him a ride.
Friday when he showed up for school, he was sober and I could see the change in him. I didn't have to give him a ride and his uncle is trying to get him a car, I may have to help yet. But if will change the man's perspective, I'll be happy to do it. I must do it anyway.
