The Walmart you don't know

MattTheSkywalker said:

I give more back to the community in a fiscal year than you will in your entire life.

Just so you know.

And I've never bought anything at wal mart.

I think you're pretty on the ball generally speaking but this is an absurd thing to say.

You have no reason to say something like this. You know nothing about who he is or how much he makes... not that that determines the worth of an individual anyways.

Arrogant comments like this detract from the insightful things you sometimes have to say.

OK. you win. When he makes ass-head comments it's OK, but when I do it, it's bad. Yawn. If he creates scores of jobs in his community I will apologize for the comments. Otherwise, no can do.

Milo,

Ultimate capitalist? Nahh...it's all perspective, picking your battles. Railing against outsourcing or offshorign is like shoveling shit against the tide. it;s never going to stop.

Although it's obviously futile most people would probably say one should be at least idealistically against sweatshops and the like.

You can be a strong capitalist without being cold-hearted to the point of absurdity.

You're entitled to make ass-head comments... as we see... but again you have no idea what his job is or how much he makes.

Working on the assumption that you're one of the richest and therefore best on elite possibly belies interesting things about your personality... off the web.

wow it was hard to work belies into that sentence :(

...

I guess the difference is that I do not beleive those things are good for the country or the economy. You do... and you hold the dollar higher than any other value or ideal.

I strongly believe Matt... that you would sell this country out if given the chance. Everyone has their priorities.

Maybe if you had kids and a hope for their future you would feel differently.

And although you may thinks its akin to "shovelling shit against the tide" Im not the kind of person to just give in... no matter what the odds.

enough people shovelling shit may hold the tide back long enough to build a damn.

and Id rather die trying that not try at all. And many of my countrymen feel the same way.

I served my country for three years. I feel like I paid the price of admission. I actually do want to make change, but my understanding of how to do it may be different than yours. The mediam household income is only $43K - that means 50% of households earn less thanthat. Trying to get them to "buy American" at a greater cost is foolish.

Sometimes we need to take a cold hard look at what the "average American" is: a low income earning, weakly educated "working class" person who cannot se past the immediate future. Then we need to re-orient our ideas on how to make change, since these people will probably never be change agents.

I don't have kids and that is probably a factor in my world view. My sister does though (well, due in January) .....so I am not without a personalized window to the next generation.

Lift Chief,

That was a nice job getting "belies" in there. Off of EF.com I stay in a very small circle. I've seen a lot in my life (through military life and moving around a lot) but I admit that I don't believe we are al equal, and I keep my circles pretty small. I don't think many people have much to offer, and I will find those who do. :)

Americans can only blame Americans for the loss of jobs and crappy economy we have.... All of the corp heads want to increase their revenue and profits to get a big fat check at the end of the quarter/year. To do so, they must lower their overhead costs and what other way would be to send the manufacturing process overseas where labor is so dirt cheap.

Walmart is almost as bad as Microsoft... their unfair practices have driven many mom/pop shops out of business....

...

Matt... you have to start somewhere.

Doing nothing... apathy and cruising along for the easy ride on a comfortable income may be working for you... but it wont work for your sisters kids... any your friends kids or anyone else that will keep this country going in the future.

At its current trend your beloved capitialism will go the way of the dinosaur..along with this country.

Can you not see the parallels to Rome? I know you can... the difference is that we are only 200 years old... not 2000. And its happening at an accelerated pace.

I do not think the average American is stupid (not saying you do) but I do think they spend the majority of their existence in a day to day struggle to put food on the table. And in their mind cannot afford the luxury to consider these things.

But what they do NOT realize is that being inconsiderate to these ideals will only eternally perpetuate their plight.

Our media will NEVER educate them to these ideals... and you and I WILL disagree to the reasons why.. but nontheless I think you will agree they will never get the messgae for whatever reason.

Somehow, someway... the average American NEEDS to be told, educated and has to become more Nationalistic in their attitudes and cultures. Its up to people like us... educated people who care about the future of this country to teach them one by one.. neighborhood by neighborhood.

The Barabrians are at the gate.. they are banging loudly and our rulers our letting them in slowly, but surely. And the ones the arent getting in are stealing little bits of Rome peice by peice and using to build their own Romes in far away places like China, Mexico and India.

maybe you think Im an idealist. I am. I am also a staunch Nationalist and a Patriot. I beleive in capitialism... but capitialism with ethics... maybe an impossible idea.

A personal anecdote:

I was in Savannah GA a few years ago for the St. Patrick's Day festival. If you've never been, I strongly suggest you go.

Anyway i was wearing a Nike / Syracuse sweatshirt was a big orange swoosh on it. This young girl from teh "Savannah College of Art and Design" walked up to me and said "Don;t you know Nike uses sweatshops to make their stuff"?

So I looked at her and said, "Sweatshirt....sweatshop - makes perfect sense to me".

I really couldn;t care less.

LOL exactly!

From what I see in this thread, emotion is the driving force. Not one person, save the article, has demonstrated any reason for why WalMart's practices are going to destroy the country. The machination of industry was seen as the same "destructive" force, in the early 1900's. Everyone was scrambling and yelling "the sky is falling", yet nothing happened, save some jobs were lost and new jobs were created.

If Wal-Mart's practices go against the principles of economics, then it will suffer. It cannot change human action.
