I'm the least technologically up to date on these things, but I know that I had a hard time playing AVIs in Windows Media (read: got the same error you did) until I downloaded and installed the DivX codecs. You can get it at http://www.divx.com/divx/ - the 3.0mb download on the left is the one you want.

If the movie isn't in .avi format, then I don't know what to tell you.
