You're right it was a cheap shot. Please don't take it personally; I'm an asshole with everyone. Having been a teacher previously myself I appreciate your sentiment.
I feel kind of bad for her. You know she has the internet and is probably reading these comments, some of which are really cruel. She shouldn't feel bad- most teenagers aren't too bright. Heck, most Americans aren't too bright- they elected George W. Bush TWICE! Now that's embarrassing.
Really, she might just be too dumb to even get that she's being made fun of she probably thinks she's popular because of the many comments, assuming she can read.
