My job at the front desk of a gym is no different than any other receptionist position. Would you call the switchboard at Merrill Lynch and start volunteering your financial situation in detail, then follow up by asking where you should invest your life savings?... or how to set up trust funds for your kids? You "hold" while I direct you, then you say, "Thank you." when I am done. To which I reply, "You're very welcome. Have a nice day."

You should do whatever you need to assist your customer including showing them how the security system works.. even multiple times

Do NOT tell the front desk person your entire life story and the reason WHY you are cancelling your membership
As a receptionist, its your job to listen compasionatly and then explain the process, and then apologise that you can't do this for them yourself

I DO try to tell assist them to the best of my ability yet THEY DO NOT LISTEN AND GET ANNOYED WHEN I TRY TO DEFER THEM TO WHERE THE ANSWERS THEY SEEK CAN BE FOUND. I do not EVER EVER EVER catch attitude with these morons, yet they always seem to find a way to get annoyed with the fact that I am ONLY front desk and NOT a personal trainer OR the General Manager OR a Customer Service Rep OR the fact that if they would just wait patiently until I can assist them with the limited abilities that are defined by my job description then so much less of THEIR valuable time would be wasted.

I am ONE PERSON and there is never EVER EVER a need to come at me with hostility when I say, "I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience, however that is club policy." Then they continue on and on with why they want to cancel their gym membership regardless of the fact that I have to keep putting them on hold to assist other waiting members and of course there are the peeps that keep scanning the key tag again and again and again day after day while I come over with a smile and keep telling them day after day after day to PLEASE just wait a second/two between scanning attempts and then the person that is still on hold is now getting uber annoyed that I have to keep putting her on hold to continue assisting other patrons and I can only keep coming back on to give her THE SAME INFORMATION OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

I have NEVER EVER gotten attitude with a patron, though MANY have fucking deserved it.

Funny thing? I have worked out at many different gyms in a few diff states and other countries as well. I have NEVER EVER had a problem with any one on any staff of any gym. Why is that?

I have ALWAYS had jobs interacting with the public whether it was nursery school teacher, receptionist, owner of MY OWN BUSINESS, bartender OR stripper. Every boss ALWAYS loved me and was sad when I would leave as they knew that though there were times that I was surrounded by drunk/high straight up ASSHOLES or peeps who had major attitudes I was never ever late, always did my job with a smile, was uber-trustworthy and beyond competent regardless of what they threw at me, never fucked anyone I worked with or a client and never EVER drank or did drugs.
