The $10,000 Hernia Log From Hell

Here is the update on my hernia surgery.

I went in for surgery in December. It took approximately one hour. It was a small outpatient clinic and the surgery was fast and well done.

On day one (day of surgery) I want home and relaxed. I ate two small meals. On day two I my tummy was a bit swollen and I had some minor abdominal cramps. I didn’t have a bowel movement since two days before surgery and the bloat had me concerned.

Over the next two days I rank lots of fluids and ate small meals. I didn’t urinate nor did I have any bowel movements. By day 3 my stomach swelled up and my stomach probably went from 34 inches to over 40. The pain was so unbearable I went to the ER and I was admitted for having an ileus.

An ileus occurs when the GI tract shuts down. It happens in two situations. A mechanical ileus which occurs when the intestines becomes twisted and an ileus by paralysis (which is what I had) and this occurs usually after surgery. The intestines are very sensitive and sometimes shut down after surgery.

Anyway, everything that I ate was sitting in my GI tract and not moving. Nothing goes out – no fluids, no feces and no gas. Everything I ate prior to surgery and after was sitting in my GI tract and it was expanding due to the gasses.

At the ER they stuck a nasal tube down nose into my stomach. Over the next week they sucked out over 4 liters of green and black intestine gunk. I was stuck on an IV for fluids and had to have an IV for food intake.

On day 7 I finally passed gas. Imagine not farting for over a week and how painful it is to have all of that gas inside you. After a week in hospital [around day 8] (which included Christmas) I finally managed to have a bowel movement. The colon is the last area to recover so it would simply flow out – I couldn’t squeeze anything out. It still took about 5 days after that to have somewhat normal bowel movements and to pass gas.

I am in week 3 of recovery and I am still not 100%. I have normal bowel movements but the abdominal pains are still present. If I eat too much I am crippled. Diet has been oatmeal and other soft foods but I have started eating normal foods in small quantities. My weight was 210 and I am down to 190.

The doc said I will be 100% and ready to hit the gym in 3-5 weeks.

Compared to other surgeries and other medical things that have happened to me this was the most painful. I have been shot, broken bones, and beaten to a pulp and I’d rather have 10 broken bones and get shot than to go through this again!

The worst part is that pain killers (opoids like percocet) affect the GI tract and slow it down and cause constipation, thus slowing recovery. Because of this, I didn’t get any pain killers that helped. It sucked.

Costs for the surgery alone were around $1,800. I have not received the bill form the ER yet. I am expecting a week in the ER to cost 10K. I think (and hope) my insurance covers 80% of it.

sorry to hear that man..the worse part is that they couldn't give you anything for the pain..that had to suck!

gl on your recovery

Shoooooottt....mang..i Had Back Surgery Like 6 Months Ago..on L4 Disk..My bill was 14k...it sucked..and it was a car accident...hope you have a speedy recovery...i know it sucked when i couldnt work out...

I'm getting an umbilical hernia fixed soon at the same time I get my gyno surgery.

You must of had an inguinal hernia though.

damn bor that sucks. I'm glad the worst part is over and let's focus on that now. I wish you a speedy recovery and you'll be back at the gym in no time.

I had an epigastric hernia. That is one above the belly button/umbilical. I had three hernia's actually (three tears in the same region). He said it is rare for men to get epigastric hernia's and rare to have three tears. Usually females get them during pregnancy.

Here is a link with some basic pictures and the types.

I had an umbilical hernia when I was born and when he went in he said they did a good job on that and that portion looked fine. I think the complications I had with the ileus were a result of the epigastric type hernia because more of my abdominal cavity was exposed. I have a rather large patch in the area now. Aside from the abdominal pain from the ileus the actual area of the operation is pain free and the hardness from the patch is almost gone. If it wasn't for the damn GI tract shutting down I would be on a fast track for recovery.

I do have a decent 3-4 inch scar and I no longer have a belly button though. He cut straight up from what was my belly button (it was barely a belly button from the surgery when I was a kid) and went up about 4 inches.

Good luck with the gyno surgery. I had that done a few years ago and recovery was quick and the pain was not that bad. I even had to have tubes in for about a week to drain the fluids from the breast region (they removed a ton of fat tissue and the glands). Compared to what I went through with the hernia, the gyno surgery was a cake walk. The first week sucks. Mainly because I had tubes and showering & sleeping was a pain in the ass.

Gyno surgery was the best darn thing I ever had done. You'll be very happy with the results when you are done. I wish I had mine done in high school. (Mine was puberty/bad genetics related). Also, there are no noticeable scars. They did lipo on me and I had small holes (same holes were used for the drainage tubes) about 5 inches above the nipps and those are completely not noticeable now and the incisions they made around the areole to remove the glands are not noticeable either. I’ve run test & dbol and never had a problem with gyno since the surgery. The longest thing to heal was the nerves in the nipple area. If I remember correctly it took about 6 months for the nerves to grow back and to get feeling in the area but that was not even an issue to deal with. Also, I was back in the gym working out about 6 weeks after surgery. It did take a few months for the swelling to go down too.

On another note I did jack off like the second day after I got out of the hospital for the hernia surgery and my left seminal vesicle swelled up and hurt like a mother fucker. It has gotten better but from what I read some areas down there slow down, and in my case probably shut down, so it got clogged up. IMO don’t jack off after the surgery and do not have sex until the doc says you can. Needless to say the past few weeks have totally sucked lol
