STUDENTS!!! Anyone Feel Like Helping an Old Lady Out with Study Tips?

I haven't gone to school in uh, since I was 27 so that means 15 years.

How the HELL do you commit shit to memory that isn't words (things that you can't create mnemonic tricks for?) And I don't mean memorize it to vomit it out on a test then forget you ever read it, I mean really sink that shit in?

If you need an example, are there any tricks to memorizing the symbols on a chart like this:

This is something I was never very good at throughout school (one reason I was catastrophic at learning geometry ... and foreign languages, for that matter).

Moon, sun, mars, venus, pluto are easy. The rest you will have to actually memorize. Uranus actually does look like an anus, with an arrow, Mercury is a little closer to the sun, which means its hotter, therefore it is venus with devil horns. The sun is the biggest asshole of all, so just draw a bigger anus than uranus. I suggest flashcards and actually writing the symbols down repetitively before testing yourself.

look over it about three to four times, create condensed cliff notes so you're not reading through piles of fanciful words.

remember the facts and elaborate on them later.

I have an incredibly good memory, so I never really had to study, but that would be my advice. =)

Depends on what works for you. Hard core memorization suits me best, I just stare at things and repeat them in my head until they sink in.

Flash cards may work really well for you. Make a set with just the symbols and then a set with just the words. Then you can drill through in a couple of ways:

1. Either shuffle through or have someone hold up a symbol then you guess the name.

2. Do the same thing but have them hole up the word and you draw the symbol.

3. Lay out either the symbols or the names. Then take the other cards and when you get one up you take the symbol/name that you think is right and put them together off to the side until you match them all, then see how many you get right.

The flashcards are a good idea! Shit I forgot about those ...

It's not school, its for Wicca. I have to learn all sorts of esoteric stuff for the coven. The planetary chart is a good example of what I'm talking about but not exactly.

I want to learn astrological symbology too, but that's pretty basic, you've got about 15 planets, 12 signs and about 10 or so states/conditions, but I feel like a complete doofus having to constantly reference back to what symbol I'm looking at.

Very True. I took two levels of American Sign Language and notecards are how I passed. I use to be able to memorize a whole chapter in an hour.

I used to write it over and over. then I would eventually find that I could recall and write them without ever looking.

this is not your average way of remembering but it REALLY works and its easy.

on your way to work you probably take the same route everyday right? well, while your driving look at the different stores, businesses, bus stops etc and for each term you need to remember put one and associate it with a certain landmark.

for example:

if you had say 3 words to remember and you pass by a mcdonalds, staples and burger king. take each word and act as if your "putting it in the building" that you pass. everytime you go down that same route everytime you see the different buildings and landmarks remember which term you put there. make a list and after a few days you will have it burned to memory and when test time comes just think back to where you put the terms when you get to each question.

i know its not your everyday way of memorization but trust me it works like you wouldnt believe.

the other way is to record it to a voice recorder and put it on a cd and play it in your car while you drive, thats another good way.

im in school now and i have a ton of ways to remember stuff. its fun after a while.

id probably go flashcards with that one, look at the symbols, guess what planet.

then once you become awsome at that, make up practice tests for yourself... sprinkle random planets around on a sheet (words wise) and draw up the symbols for them,

if you have a good photographic immagination (dont know how else to phrase that) after your good with that, like morning of a test or night before, or whenever you wanan brush up, go either side, words or symbols, and when you see the words picture the symbol in your head.

whatever technique you do (whether flashcards, a poster behind your toilet door etc) remember that the human brain remembers color, and also remembers things better if you associate them with other things ie tell yourself a story

in the case of your funky little pictures, get a bunch of colored pencils. draw teh "mars" one in red. next to it write "the planet mars is red. the romans swore by mars while they killed each other, and there was red blood everywhere". you associate the symbol with the word and the color and so memory is triggered better. read it to yourself a few times and look at the pic and youll find that youll be able to "see" the red symbol you drew, in your head

same with the uranus one. draw it in brown or something and write "one day the devil bent over, and it was a horrible sight" cos the arrow bit at the top looks like a forked tail.

Okay, this tradition places a heavy emphasis on esoteric knowledge. By esoteric, I mean the true definition of the word, meaning hidden or deeper knowledge or teachings that are possessed or understood only by a few. In religion this manifests in the "mystical".

So right now the coven, as a whole, is studying mystical Qabala (which I already thought was a major PITA all by itself), but now since being dedicated there's a whole bunch of other stuff I need to learn about and a lot of it is not in English and leans heavily symbols.

That's alright, I'm about to have a nervous breakdown anyway. One of the books is online and it's so far out there it's nonsensical.

I found my memory improved the more I used it - like for a time I had severe OCD and had issues with counting and compulsive reading habits. When I'd take tests, I was able to reproduce the entire semester's worth of notes word-for-word. Every answer to every question was in the words that were written on the chalk board in weeks or months past. I was weird.

I'm not sure how that is supposed to help you or anything but yeah, try to remember lots of things and eventually it just gets easier. For me, I can remember numbers and letters pretty easily and I'm pretty sure it was the compulsive counting of letters that did it.

I find it much easier to retain information when I write it myself instead of just reading it off another document. I could stare at that chart for years and probably still not get those symbols right. But I could write them myself and memorize them in 30 minutes

Memorize one symbol per day. Think about only one a day, all day. In 11 days, you'll have it nailed.

He's on the right track for this specific example. All those symbols have derivations -- learn them. Then it isn't rote memorization, but an actual understanding. Look at both science and mythology.

Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are the only ones I can't get off the bat. The rest are pretty self-explainatory.

Personally, I'd just call them x1, x2,...,xn.
