Squats stunt growth?

Sub-Zero

im wondering if squats stunt your growth(im guessing from the weight on the back?)...

i ask this because i had my first wrestling practice today, and we are starting a serious lift routine (yeah i never lifted seriously before)....squats are one of the required exersises, and i heard some short kids bitching about how it stunts growth...

Short kids will come up with many excuses for why they are short. As I short guy I know this first hand.:D

Um, I am pretty sure that heavy lifting at younger ages can close off/damage bone caps. Maybe this depends on the use of proper form but I thought this was fairly well documented.

I think the general consensus is that one who is still growing should not lift weights with high intensity. I don't think there is anything wrong with squatting by itself so long as you don't take every set to absolute failure and whatnot. It feels a little blasphemous to say that...

I disagree. I think that's 100% crap, but that's just my opinion lol.

If that's the general consensus then the general consensus needs a wakeup bitch slap.

Well most people grow until their early 20's, so I guess all the college and high school athletes, and all the young bb/PL/strongman/oly lifting etc etc etc champs are doing it all wrong lol.

I don't think there's any proof either way. I'd say good weight routines promote good eating -- which is likely to make one grow taller than he or she otherwise would.

Yep, and probably also stimulates an increase in your natural testosterone and growth hormone.

Shit...I heard bones grow til you hit 28 ..haha Why is stunted growth a big deal anyway? Maybe its just me, but Ive never had the desire to be tall.

Haha yea thats because you think of yourself 6 inches taller and you realize you wouldn't look near as huge :)

As a 6'3 dude I like being tall but it has it's disadvantages. ie I gain 10 lbs and you can't tell a difference

ive squatted since i was 14, at the time i was about 5'7", at 19 im 6'3". I dont think it stunted my growth. However the asthma meds did...

The only thing that will close off ephisal plates prematurely, is a trauma (ie a bad break or compacting injury, like a fall.) ANyway, squatting for anyone who has under a year of training can be a dangerous thing, do to structural stability issues.

we are wearing a belt i fthats what you mean;)

No, weight belts will not help w/ the structural issue. lol Certain muscle groups need to be strengthened before an individual should support weight on there shoulders.
