I think you should try the barbell 1st, then use a towel or padding if its really uncomfortable on your traps. When your jsut starting out & learning to squat, stuff like this manta ray thing gets you into bad habits.

Wouldn't a callous be visible? I don't see how bodybuilders would like that (which is why this doesn't make sense to me).

Sorry, I just started squatting so I don't really know...
 
its a muscular callous, as well on the skin. Clint isnt a body builder, so he doesnt really care what it looks like :)
 
Well I'm just saying I know bodybuilders squat but I know they dont want a line of hard skin across their backs... Maybe I'm thinking of the callous thing wrong?
